I have been seeing prices of $550-$600 in my area for Model 19-3's. None of the last four I saw had boxes either. $550 for near mint with box, etc would certainly appeal to me.

Make sure when you see it, it really is "mint".
Would 5 bills cash get it bought?

If mint $550 is about as high as I would go. Always try to buy it for less. Don

A local gun shop just had 4 19-3 6 inch barrels in the wood presentation case for $300 each, all new unfired, all with some kinda coin. The gun shop is in Palm Beach County FL. I bought one, don't know how many are left. They are LAPD stamped. I have no affiliation w/shop.

He started out at a pretty firm $600 and agreed to come down to $550. It's the 4" barrel. We're setting up a meet.

If you want it, and it is in mint condition, then buy it. You don't come across those nice one very often. Not a bad price for what you are buying. If you decide to sell it later on, you should be able to get your money back, if it is taken care of. If you don't buy it, you will probably kick yourself later for not getting it. Go for it!

$50 shouldn't stand in the way of getting anything that is "The right stuff".
Way too much concern shown here about getting every penny back some day or thinking it's a money making scheme, should you decide to sell later on.Enjoying it now is what matters.Much more than $50 of effort can be expended, looking for another prime example.

Price............that's the biggest problem with being into things that are out of production, if you want one, you have to be prepared to buy it when and where you find it.
I've paid "more than I'd like to" for guns I really wanted, but I knew if I didn't the next guy would, and then when will I see another one.
I keep a "list" in my mind, there's always 3 or 4 near the top of that list, I'm prepared to buy them when and where I find them, price be damned......well to a point.

I have discovered in the last few weeks that, at least in Georgia, there ain't no such thing as a $450 Model 19.
I have put in $450 offers on two different 19-4s, neither of which was in particularly great condition, and both of them brought the asking price of $500 in less than a day.
Invariably, someone will point out a NIB for $350 somewhere, and I don't doubt that they exist, but if you wait for that kind of deal, you might be "Smith-less" for a long time.
I would jump at the gun as described by the OP if that is what I was hunting.

There is no firm number of what any gun is worth. One pays what it is worth to them. What other guys think, doesn't matter to me-I don't buy guns with the notion that it will be a one year, two year thing. If one only has X amount of dollars, that's one thing, however if the goods are right, and it falls within the reasonable zone, that's good enough for me.Criteria #1 is that the goods are right, really right.Price is secondary.....Reckon I'm more of a collector,so condition is paramount.

Locally I'm seeing 85% - 90% shooter grade model 19's bringing right at $500 with no dickering.......when one actually shows up.
My gunsmith currently has a 98% 4" 19-5 with no box or docs in the case for $600. He will probably get it.
It appears that with the current product S&W now produces, and the asking prices for same, the model 19's are now going to bring $500 +.
Unless of course you are always looking like I am, and find a 95% 2.5" 19-4 with some blue wear on the trigger guard......for $350. Of course I bought it!! Regards 18DAI.

That'd be considered a fair price for a used 19-3 in good condition in Northern Va.

I would buy it. I live in California and I just saw a few days ago a model 19 4 inch shooters grade for $650. Did not have the original grips. Best price I have seen was a nickel 19-3 4 inch without a box but had the original grips for $550. This was back at Christmas.
My advice, if the gun is as good as the seller describes, I would jump on it.
Good luck,
