Default Clip Holsters: Love 'em or Hate 'em?

I just watched someone at the range draw their gun (and holster) out at the same time

What are your thoughts on clip holsters?

if they have a well designed clip you are good, but if it is a standard clip, well you saw the results. A good clip should go behind your belt and then lip under the bottom of the belt securing it there.
Even better if it has a small spur to help secure to the pants themselves.

Default Clip holsters

IMO the only ones I saw work are from CrossBreed. Many holsters comes
out with the guns.

I think this is one of those instances where you have to be smarter than the holster.

What Crazy K38 said. I use FIST holsters most of the time for large DA revolver IWB carry. The clip on FIST IWB holsters has a tongue that locks under the belt. While the gun is snapped very securely in the holster, there is still no way that the holster can come out with the gun.

As others have noted, clip holsters work just fine...when used properly. My IWB holsters are all with clips; two with "j hooks" and two with "over the belt" hooks. All are able to be "locked" in place by the belt. I make sure they are.

FWIW, I find the "j hook" holsters best for concealability. When used properly it is very difficult for anyone to note their presence.

Be safe.

I have a couple IWB clip holsters made by The Holster Store. The clip goes over the belt and back under to make a loop. You have to grab the bottom of the clip and pull it out from under the belt to take it off so it can't come out with the gun by mistake.

My holsters from Alessi seem to hold even if you don't wear a belt (although I don't recommend it) and the High Noon clips work very well, as do the FIST versions.

Wearing a belt makes all of them incapable of being drawn with the gun.

All of my IWB holsters are Don Hume 715Ms. I've never had a single problem with them. In fact, Massad Ayoob has singled them out for their security on the belt.

My problem is just the opposite.

I have several clip on holsters for the various guns I will carry. My cuff and mag case is a clip on.

The problem is they work too good. I have extreme difficulty pulling them out of my belt.

If a person buys a good clip on holster or mag case, it will hold securely. Most people try to get by as cheap as possible and buy those inferior fabric models. Get leather, pay between $100-200 for one and you will be pleased but will get annoyed at how difficult they are to remove.

I ordered a Milt Sparks Summer Special when I first got my permit. It was a beautifully made holster but the thick leather and those heavy straps made the thing look like a giant tumor on my side when carrying under a loose shirt. I sent it back and ended up with a $40 leather Bianchi IWB with a clip that continues to conceal and function perfectly. There are a lot of nice IWB holsters out there with straps that must work for someone but I'll stick with clips.

All my IWB holsters are clip models. Have never had a problem other than removing them. Gun comes out, holster stays where it should.

I have two clip IWB holsters one from Highnoon and the other a crossbreed, I have practiced drawing from them plenty of times and never had either holster even slightly come out.

I never wear a belt. All my IBS have clips only. I found Done Hume and Bianchi Professional 100 to be pretty sturdy. I once got a holster with a bad clip because it was the only one I found at the time for the PPS and I simply switched out the bad clip with one from an unused Bianchi.

If the gun sticks a bit, slick up the interior of the holster. I use wax, but I'm sure there are better ways.

Good point re: the straps and excess size of some IWB holsters. I am of the opinion "less is more" when it comes to IWB's. After all, their purpose is to conceal. Still don't understand the purpose/need for the multiple straps and fasteners when a simple over/under belt clip works just fine.

BTW, though I do have one holster with a metal clip, I much prefer the plastic/composite clips. Much easier on clothing and car seats.

Be safe.Be safe.

I have always had great luck with FIST holsters,my only complaint is there are no clips offered as an option for 1 1/2" belts.

I trust my life with my Del Fatti clip and my Highnoon clip.

Anchors...most clips are oversized...but if it is the type that grabs the pants, it should be okay. I used their clip with my 1 1/2 belt and it worked fine...

Anchors - all my Fist clip holsters work with a 1.5" belt. I have 4. Did you mean 1.75"?

I think he means that the clip is sized for 1.75 and he wants one sized for 1.5. But like we both said, it works fine with 1.5.
