Price check S&W 66-2
Some days' I can get the search feature to work great, whereas other days, it just seems pretty lame. Anyway, I ran across a very decent 66-2 with a 2.5" barrel. The dealer wants 599. + tax, and I'm on the fence. I can't seem to find a comparable config so as to give me any idea if this is a fair value. Yes, I checked with GB & GA but there is currently nothing that matches. Anyway, I would appreciate any feedback.

Model 66 Price
I would say that is a little high. Around $500 if it is nice, but not much more.

For that price I would want LNIB or at least very close to it. But I sure don't know what gun prices are like in Az.

I'd think somewhere in the $550~$600 range would be sweet. I watched a guy at a gun show sell one within 30ft of walking in the door for his asking price of $625 about 2 months ago. He was happy, but wished he'd asked more for it.
I think the -1 brings a little more, as would one with the proper box etc.
Offer 550 OTD and see what happens, if you really want it be ready to do 600 OTD.
What it all boils down to is how bad do you want it, and how likey is it that somebody else will come right behind you willing to pay his asking price.

Thanks; I suppose that stands to reason based on the dealership. Its a great store but there is very little competition in my town, and we’re 200-miles away from a real city. I almost wanted to trade my NIB 686 w/2.5” although it looks like I could do better elsewhere. This store isn't likely to lower the price, so with tax I would pay closer to $660.00.

Put an ad in the WTB section here. If you're just looking for a nice shooter you can likely do better than that. You didn't say you were looking for NIB, but
CAUTION - THREAD DRIFT - - -
insistence on NIB with all the case candy for out-of-production guns is begging to pay premium. I appreciate folks wanting the best condition they can get, but I must admit the slavish adherence of some in asking for NIB takes on silly proportions sometimes, in my opinion. If you're spending your own money you are certainly entitled to dictate the terms of what you'll accept for it, but I must confess I fail to understand the mindset of someone collecting up a few retail new (factory fired) specimens and hoarding them away for someone else to eventually use, especially when there were a gazillion of them made. But to each his own.
Now back to our original programming . . .
There are plenty of 66's out there and I find when I get the bug for something specific, if I just amass the funds and be patient, eventually the wait is rewarded. It's when I convince myself I must have it now, that I get myself in trouble . . .

Plus one with NFrameFred. If it is going to be a shooter, a slight amount of wear knocks a significant amount off the price.

Well, to my surprise I was able to strike a deal ‘of sorts’ with my local pusher. Besides, the action was simply too good to pass up. I haven’t felt something like that since a fellow LEO allowed me to shoot his customized Model-27 back in 1975.
BTW: The gun will be a shooter, so I wasn't looking for a NIB with papers. Even with the price concession I’m sure I could have found a better deal, but the bug bit me, and the rest is now history. So much for committing to ‘no more guns’.

66-2's
pinned and recessed
recessd only
not pinned, not recessed
Each commands a different price
Here's a recessed,99K Prefix serial number, not pinned 66-2 with serialized right stock

I wish I had seen this post before I ran down and snagged the 66-2 into lay-away. In any event, it wasn’t pinned and I don’t think it was recessed. So by this measure, I assume it’s the most current vintage. The serial number starts with ACC7xxx and I have no clue as to the production date. Either way, I'm still excited with just how smooth and tight the action felt. The overall condition was really good but not quite as nice as your photo.
