S&W Model 539
What can you tell me about this model? A local dealer has one LNIB instock. He's asking $550. I don't really need another 9mm but this gun is really nice.

The 539 is an updated version of the Mod 39 and was only made from around 1982 to 1985. These have carbon steel slides and frames, unstead of an aluminum alloy frame like the 439. The 539 weighs more then its aluminum frame counterpart, but still very manageble. Personally I find the 39/439/539/639 all have the most comfortable grip I have felt on a handgun. These are great guns that just plain work.
As for the price, it really depends on condition. If the gun you looking at has a great finish, 2 mags and the box $550 is an ok price, just a little on the high side. If the gun has a nice finish but no box or spare magazine (about $30 per mag) I would try to talk them down a little. If it has some significant blueing loss, it is really overpriced. Ultimately it is up to how much you want it. Let's say the gun is about $50 too high, I can promise you will like it more then the $50. It also depends on how often you see these guns in your area. We don't see many where I live, so if I can see one in person and the price is acceptable, I am willing to pay the extra.

Thanks for the info FirebirdV8. The 539 does have a nice feel to it. The gun is LNIB with zero blueing loss and a spare mag. The box is the blue with metal corners one and numbers to the gun. The gunshop owner says that he worked with the original owner, who's deceased now, and that he'd buy all types of firearms and then just put them away; taking them out occasionally to look at them, give them a coat of oil and then put them back in the safe. I'm going to stop by the gunshop this weekend and see if he'll dig it out of the back for me again.

With it being LNIB the price is not a steal, but about right, mainly because the 539 is a somewhat hard to find gun. If it were me, I would get it at that price. I would try to talk them down, or out of the sales tax, but that is the same with any gun deal.

I *just* bought a 539 in 95-97%, no box, 1 mag for $450 OTD. I didn't get a steal, but I think the price was fair. If it's really that minty, I'd talk 'em down but sub-$525 OTD sounds ~fair~.

I have a model 539 I love it. Very reliable, a little on the heavy side but still easy to operate, price wise I lucked out and bought mine from a widow for $100, in ok condition with 1 magazine. Love how it's an all steel pistol definitely beats these plastic glocs they sell these days, the grip to this pistol just feels right, very comfortable to hold. I'd buy it if I were you, believe me you won't be disappointed.

Welcome to the forum. Not to be rude, but if the OP is still on the fence after 5 years, It's probably best he moves on!
You can make it up to us by posting a pic of your $100 539. That will drive the locals here crazy!

Question: how much is that 539 worth today?
Sounds like $475-$525 would have been the range w/ box & 2 mags & 98% in 2010-2012. Still just a $550 gun these days?
