Default My first N-Frame: Good deal?

You guys are a bad influence. I found this forum because I thought I needed to have my 30-year-old Model 19 refinished, and after being on here a couple of weeks I've gone a bought another S&W revolver. (Of course, I rationalized this by saying since the advice I got on here about using Flitz instead of sending my 19 off to S&W for refinishing saved me about $250, I could "afford" to splurge. )

Anyway, the N-Frame bug bit me bad and so I pulled the trigger on this 28-2 earlier this week on GB and it arrived today. Serial # puts production in 79 or 80, so it's about the same age as my 19-4. I could tell by the pictures the seller sent me that the gun was a bit rougher than he was describing in the auction, but I didn't see anything I felt I could not live with if the price was right--and I thought it was based on following other auction and reading the voluminous info on here.

I'd always assumed the matt finish on the Highway Patrolman was just a utilitarian finish, but this is far from that. It's a very nice satin sheen, which reminds me of the finish on my Weatherby Mark V. Very understated and elegant looking, IMO--not utilitarian at all.

Anyhow, the gun was filthy and had obviously been stored for a long time bone dry. Under a high intensity light you can see minor freckling in several places, with a pretty good spot just under the S&W logo on the right side. The worst rust, however, was under the rear sight. I took that off and cleaned it out really good. No pitting, thankfully. Other than that, the bluing is fine. No wear marks at any of the typical spots, like the muzzle. But with the rust issue, if this gun had gone much longer without some TLC it could have been bad.

Bore is bright. No flame cutting. Lock up is tight. The slightest hint of the beginning of some endshake, but cylinder cycles fine through six double action dry fires (using snap caps). Trigger is really nice; feels like it's been worked on.

Here are some pics I just took (ignore the lint). So, did I do all right for $495 delivered?

Looks good. I have one about the same vintage and configuration.
It has been a faithful friend for many years.

Now all you have to do is get rid of the snow tires and put some nice wood grips on it and you're good to go.

Bad influence? Us?

About $500 seems like an ok price. Not great, not awful.

I actually put those on there. It came with Pachmayr Gripper grips, which look totally goofy to me on a S&W. I've always liked Pachmayr's Presentation grips. They may not look all that good, but they are comfortable.

What I'd really like to put on would be a custom set of magnas made out of ebony.

You can get N frames for less than $495, although that's not a bad price for a 28-2 in good condition. A bit of freckling is normal for a 30+ year-old gun.
You need another 28-2, but with with a 4" barrel. They handle differently from the 6 " guns.
1979 28-2, 6", Hogue grips.

My 4 inchers: Top gun is 1977-78, bottom gun is a real oldy, 1966 (both have cocobolo Herretts from CDNN:

I was recently offered a very good 4" 28-2 for $375 at a local pawn shop. I already had the three shown here, but I now wish I'd ponyed up the dough and bought it.
Now that I think about it, that was really stupid of me. $375. Jeez... What was I thinking?

Bought a few months ago for $275 when I bought a Model 57 for $450 in better shape.

Gotta love local gun pushers.

Good Lord - I've never seen deals like that!
I did luck out and got a 57 no dash for $500, but a 28-1 for $275???

Everyone here should know these are freakishly good deals - I don't want Gary 7 to think Model 28s regularly go for $275.
BTW - it appears we have a hard core Trekkie on board....

My favorite episode from the original series.

I did enough research to know that I got a more or less good deal on this gun. I always enjoy hearing about the "freakishly good deals," even though mine wasn't one of them.

Excellent choice. My first S&W was a Model 28 no dash with a 6 inch barrel. Not in the best of shape but is a tack driver.

Would be a good price around here, N frames are pretty scarce.

Just a note about the Pachmayr grips I put on. You will notice that these are the old style Presentation grips (no medallion), and they are the "small" (SN-S) size. These are NOS and I was lucky enough to snag 'em off e-bay for ten bucks.

The only Presentation grips that they sell now for the N-Frame are the SN-L large grips, which are the same size as the standard S&W target grips. The small size grips are much more comfortable, IMO.

I've got a 28-2 just like yours, complete with the old style Pachmayr Presentation grips (and the agency name stamped on the sideplate) that I carried on duty for about ten years. I know it would look better with S&W target stocks but that's not the way it looked when I carried it, so I'm leaving it 'as is'.

The way I always look at it. If I paid what it was worth to me, then I got a good deal. The awesome thing about S&W's is you can buy well cared for shooter grade guns, shoot them and enjoy them, and still have a valuable firearm. 20 years and 1000's of rounds from now that M28 will probably be worth a lot more than you've paid for it, Plus you've had the pleasure of owning and shooting it the whole time. I love this hobby.

Here are some better pics of my 28-2. I realized my camera doesn't do well with that red background.

The 28-2 is a great S&W N frame and the price you paid is about the going price around here for one with original S&W Magna grips. The gun looks like it wasn't shot very much from looking at the pictures as the exterior wear looks pretty minimal. I'd say you got a good deal just not a smokin deal. The 28-2 has been a strong seller recently with lots of forum members buying them as seen by the number of posts up here about them lately.

You will love it when you shoot it because it really absorbs recoil and is a lot more fun to shoot then it's K frame brothers in the same caliber.
