Came across several S&W revolvers, can't decide
I've been to three different shops in the last few days. One had a 64-2 with a 2 inch barrel and awful aftermarket stocks. $339. A second had a 17-4 6 inch for $449. The last had a 60-8? I think was what it was, for $449. None had the retarded lock. I can maybe afford one. All were in nice shape. The 64 had the box. And no, I don't "need" any of them. Opinions?

The 17-4 will get the most use, since it is a .22, and is the best deal at current prices, so that one gets my vote.

Plop $420. cash on the counter for the model 17. Tell them that is all you have
The K-22 is one you can keep for your lifetime and that of your
children.
22 Long Rifle in a revolver will never go 'out of style'
just plain good plinking fun.
Good luck ,,Allen

S&W K-Frame .22s are going up in price. I second the comments above. Get the .22 you will be able to buy another M64 or M60 another time.
But to each his own. Good luck and have fun.

Hello weyerbacher,
As you might guess from my sign in nick-name I’d buy the 17-4. There are a lot of police traded in 64s on the market depressing the price that model sells for so its lower price isn’t below market. The hide out gun isn’t going to be as much fun for you or your kids or grand kids to shoot as a .22. Since you wrote that you don’t need a new gun I presume you aren’t going to be carrying the 60-8 or target shooting with it a whole lot so I think you’ll get the most enjoyment out of the 17-4.
Along with delighting us with fabulous pictures, Allenframe almost always gives great advice. However, the 17-4 is so far below current market value that I would not risk insulting the store’s owner. He’s probably been buying and selling for a living for years and is not ignorant. I’d buy it, thank him for a great deal and smile all the way home. He may just keep you in mind when he gets pawned guns abandoned or sold to him cheap in the future.
Best regards,
Gil

Another vote for the 17-4. That's a heck of a good price. I paid nearly that much for mine 4 years ago.

Model 64's I have... Model 60's I have... K-22's I have and I didn't "need them" either but S&W Revolvers are habit forming As you decribe them my vote clearly goes to the 17-4 very fair price depending on condition.

I also vote for the 17, as well as the offer of 420, expecting to pay 435, and willing to pay the asking price.

Still unanimous. Why are you reading this instead of picking it up at the shop?

I guess I have to join the crowd and to tell you that is a very good price on the 17-4 and that is the one you should buy. The 22LR will last forever and is a blast to shoot and you can have a ton of fun and practice for under $20 bucks you can get in a lot of shooting.

And the final answer is.........................
17-4 for $425-$450 OTD
I'd try to put that 64 snub on layaway if they offer it.
See if he'll do it for $325.
Would be nice to have a clean one with the orig box.
They are very handy guns!
But go get that 17 and get back here with some pictures first!
Good luck!

WFR has it right!!!
Sounds like a great plan to me. The 17 will be lots of shooting. The 64 is a great practicle carry. Both are solid S&W classics.

A clean Model 64 snub in the factory box for $350 is a very good price. I reload so that keeps the price of ammo reasonable.

Weyerbacher, based on your location, we're in the same area. A friend who's opinion I trust has examined the 64-2 in question and speaks highly of it. His thoughts are that it has a very low round count and the mechanicals are in excellent shape. I don't know if you can swing the cost of it in addition to the 17, but if you can, I'd recommend picking it up too.
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with this dealer or firearm in any way (nor is my friend). As a matter of fact, I don't shop at this particular store any more due to a poorly handled customer service issue!

Fortunately for my finances, someone picked up the 64-2. At the pricepoint, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Nice decision. Classic gun. Inexpensive to shoot. Great collector value as well.
