Has anyone ever had a 5903 TSW re-finished and if so was the black etching on the slide still o.k. when you got it back or do re-finishers also re-do those?
I don't have a 5903 TSW but have had a number of guns refinished. S&W can reapply the factory markings. The average refinisher cannot. If it is etched deeply enough, you may be able to still make out the marking beneath the new finish, but it will not look like factory. ymmv
Unless you are getting one of the "wonder coatings", I would always suggest returning the gun to S&W for a refinish. It is absolutely worth the money and they will put your markings back to new. I do not know how they deal with the alloy frames however, the last I remember is they do not offer a change of finish on alloy, so I am sure they will still refinish it. The last alloy frame they refinished for me was over 20 years ago.
