Smile New 25 MG 45 Colt Blued!

I've been waffling back and forth for some time now over buying either a 24 or 25/625 (45 Colt). I finally bought a 25 Mountain Gun, blued, 45 Colt yesterday. Probably paid more than I should have, but, some days chickens and some days feather. It's going to be a few days before I can pick it up due the "idiot" Daley laws here in Illinois.

Anyway, my question to all of you model 25 knowledgeable members is: Can I safely shoot the commercially available +P loads in it. I'm not talking about the Buffalo Bore, etc., super heavy hunting loads. Just stuff like the Winchester PDX1, and other similar self defense ammo.

When I pick it up on Monday, I get a 10% discount on any ammo and accessories if I buy them at that time. I've already bought a few boxes of Win Cowboy loads at Farm and Fleet for $29+ a box. I'd like to get some SD ammo when I pick it up. I plan on picking up a couple of speedloaders as well, and maybe even a holster. They have a big bin of misc holsters marked way off. I think I've seen S&W N-Frame ones in there before.

This is my first N-frame since I sold all of my 57s and 58s some years ago. I'm looking forward to shooting it. I sorta' miss those guns, but I don't miss the pain in my hands and wrists brought on by extensive arthritis.

Thanks.

SgtSam

Any commercial ammo will be fine in the 45 MG. However 45 colt (for reasons never understood) has always been ridiculously expensive. You can get a basic reloading kit and make a load that's easy on you.

Try the Speer 250gr GDJHP in .45 Colt. It'll make ~800 fps from that 4" tube - great thin skin stopper. Reported frontal diameter of .76"+ and little mass lost - good penetration, too. A 255gr LSWC at the same velocity or so is effective, too. In my loads, I can get 850+ fps in standard pressure loads with those bullets - some folks load to over 900 fps for their 625 MGs. The Speer 250gr Gold Dot, #4484, is pre-stressed/thin-walled for low speed enlargement.

I have two 625MGs - super fun. ongratulations - the 25MGs are beautiful.

Hi Stainz....

Would you happen to know if the 200-gr. Gold Dot in .44 Sp. is pre-stressed/thin-walled as well?
It's what I want to carry for SD when I eventually acquire a .44 Sp.

BTW...Are you getting 800 out of a 4-inch? The Speer chart has the .45 Colt listed at 750 fps. out of their 5.5" test bbl. (non-vented).

Regards ~ Skeeziks.

Another vote for the 250 Gold Dot. In my 625 Mountain Gun they make about 875 FPS, and have a great HP bullet design.

Wheres the pics man???

I love blued Smiths and my 25-13 was one, but I just prefer the 625-6 .45 Colt version where the firing pin is on the hammer...
