Default What is a 5908?

Just started to turn my collecting intrest toward S&W autos and picked up a couple of 5906s from AIM......just noticed one is labeled Mod 5908 on the side. A goggle on that doesn't return anything.....any one have any background?

I do not believe they ever made a 5908, but there were so many third gen model numbers flying around during Steve Melvin's tenure as President that there could be. My guess, however, is a bad photo, or a mistaken label, and even perhaps a sloppy stamping job on the model number on the side of the frame, resulting in a "blur" that someone has mistaken for "5908." Certainly, a picture would help.

FYI....No model 5908 listed in SCSW.

another agree - may well be a sloppy '06 or '03 stamping that resembles '08.
