My 83 year old Dad gave me his Dad's old S&W breaktop handgun. My Dad lives in Gainesville, Georgia and his Dad lived in North Georgia and North Carolina.
Two pictures attached. Looks like the plating (? Nickel) is almost all worn off. I am only interested in the date, caliber (.38 S&W I assume) and S&W Model name.
The serial number appears to be: 89841 although the "9" might be a "0".
You have a .38 Safety Hammerless, Third Model, produced between 1890 and 1898. Yes, it is .38 S&W, not .38 Special.
Great to have a family revolver. My parents and grandparents were not gun people, so my opportunities for heirloom shooters were pretty much foreclosed on. I consider myself lucky to have ended up with a small semi-auto that belonged to an uncle.
