Need price check on early 38/44 Heavy Duty [pics added]
I need the experts to chime in here and give me a price check on a pre-war 38/44 Heavy Duty. Serial number is 395xx. Bluing is original, minimal wear with some very faint freckling in spots, but no active rust or pitting. I'd say finish is 95%. Case color on hammer and trigger is flawless. Absolutely zero endshake. Timing is spot on and the action is as tight as any S&W I've ever handled. No markings anywhere to indicate it's ever been back to the factory. The screws don't look like they've ever been touched. In fact, the gun looks like it's been fired very little.
Does not have the original grips. It's got diamond Magnas, which I don't even think are pre-war grips from the way they fit.
So what would be the going rate for this gun? I'll try to take some pics of it later if I can.

In my neck of the woods without the grips, $450-550. Period correct grips would range $250-450 for this gun. Make sure all the serial numbers match,ie; cylinder, barrel, butt, backside of ejector star. Hope this helps!

If you can get that gun with the wrong wood for $600 or less, that would be OK. Sell the magnas for $100 or so, and put a couple of hundred into some decent service stocks. Or even some custom stags. HDs look really good in stags. You'll have a great package.
Here's a couple of visions to lead you on ...
39601, just about the same age as yours, with the original grips but less original finish:
And from a couple of years later, a gun with similar finish and some Grashorn stags:
I would agree it is unlikely the magnas on the gun now are prewar, but if you get it, please let us know the numbers pressed into the back of the right panel.

Great score! Congratulations on your new classic shooter.
Make sure you give us a range report when you have a chance. I have found that a Heavy Duty is one of the most inherently accurate S&Ws I have shot.

I've got it on a 3-day inspection and can return it for any reason. Given the prices I've seen on HDs in much worse condition than this, I think for $500 I'll keep it.

You did great. Not a lot of those out there for that price.

Gary,
You did well. The gun should have service grips on it like Dave's first gun has. Good job on a great gun!

I ordered these stag grips for it today. Just so happens the seller used an HD to "model" the grips, so I know what mine will look like with them.
