Default Any cigar smokers out there?

I just finished up a nice Hoyo excalibur. It was a little larger gauge than what I normally smoke, but a very fine cigar all the same. Does anyone else here have any prefered cigars that they like? I have been a fan of Punch and Macanudo for years now, or for that matter most anything in a corona size and lighter/milder wrapper. The rubustos and other dark leaf cigars just knock me for a loop for some reason. Also, does anyone have any tricks on how to evenly light a cigar? I can never seem to get it to burn in a nice, concentric circle. They always seem to burn a little faster on one end or the other, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks to anyone else who likes indulge in this particular vice

Do you roll it while you light it? And if you are in a breazy or windy area, or driving a vehicle with the window down it will cause it to burn that way too, in that case you can try rolling it after you light it.

I'll try that tonight. I thought about it after I lit this last one up and realized it was too late to try it. I didn't used to smoke them with the regularity I have been lately, but this job either stresses you out or bores you so badly that you have to find something along those lines to help you out. Any brands or flavors you recommend?

Default STOGIES

I do enjoy a fine cigar four or five times a week. A nice glass of Single Barrel Jack Daniels goes very nice with them too! I rotate through a few favorites that I have come to really enjoy and they are:

Ashton - Churchill
Arturo Fuente - Double Chateau
Partagas Serie - D - #4
CAO Gold - Corona Gorda
Romeo Y Julieta
Cuaba - Solamon
Rocky Patel R-4
Macanudo Special Reserve - 2000
Partagas Reserve (green band)
Punch Gran Cru - Torpedo
Nat Sherman - Oxford (no longer made)

I do try new cigars all the time, but the ones listed above always seem to be my favorites, and I keep coming back to them. In general, the thicker the cigar and longer it is, the smoother and more mellow the taste will be. Some of he cigars I smoke are very expensive and some are very reasonable. Don't judge them by price, you have to find what appeals to your individual taste. It also helps if you can smoke your cigar when you have some time to relax......when you are pressed for time or there are people around you who dislike the smell and the smoke, that's not the time to light up. ENJOY!!

Umm, nothing better then a beverage in one hand, alcoholic of course, and a smoke in the other. Best when sitting outside in front of the fire pit with a big ole fire burning. Try a Liga Privada No.9 by Drew Estate....Man now I'm wanting one...Some JD and a cigar..nothing more relaxing then that. Maybe two JD's...

Not as much anymore, BUT if I had my arm twisted just a hair: It would be a Padron 1964 in one hand and a Glass of Balvenie Single Malt in the other.

Upmann Corona Major. Nearly 40 years ago I worked for Jerry Goodman in Denver (his son, Brett, has the shop now) and I was allowed to sample anything and everything in the shop (once). This is my all-time favorite.
(But I would really like some Balkan Sobranie cigarettes ~ sigh, no more). The stuff available today ain't the same.

I'm still trying to lay my hands on some candela wrapper smokes. They look very interesting to me. And has anyone else noticed the longer/fatter the cigar, the smoother the smoke?

You might notice that my handle is the name of a cigar. There's a story there, but for another time. I have been carrying the alias for much longer than I have been smoking cigars.

I burn 3 to 5 a week, more if I am on a motorcycle trip and have some Overholt handy. These days I am burning a lot of Rocky Patel (the Edge Maduro Missile) and Perdomo Reserve (the price came way down), but that is mostly because that is what my local cigar shop has the best prices on.

Depending on where I am buying, I might smoke Padron (I can clearly remember the best cigar I ever smoked, a 1964 Anniversary), Punch (particularly the Corojo Rothschilds), Fuente Cuban Corona, or whatever seems well-priced on a given day. If I am in the right neighborhood, I might pick up a bundle of Punch seconds for a road trip. If I want a nicotine fix, I might burn a La Gloria Cubana, although they are getting a bit spendy for my taste.

I generally prefer a maduro wrapper, as they are usually a little milder than the naturals, with a better flavor. This afternoon I enjoyed a very nice Perdomo Patriarch Corona Maduro, the first I have tried.

That perdomo corona maduro sounds like it's about my speed actually. I love a good corona sized cigar. I wonder if it doesn't stem from when I was a tight *** in college and bought the cheap-o specials off the counter at the gas station on a regular basis. Has anyone else smoked the Dannemann espada line? I have really enjoyed those, especially since they come pre-cut. It's very convienient if you are in kind of a hurry.

I smoke lots of cigars, mostly Nicaraguan and Honduran maduros. I smoke Cubans when I'm overseas.

Robusto is just a size (generally 5" x 50 ring) and has nothing to do with the type of wrapper or filler leaf. I generally prefer torpedos and perfectos in a maduro.

A little bit of culture with our smokes'.............................

"You must choose between me and your cigar."
--BREACH OF PROMISE CASE, CIRCA 1885.

Open the old cigar-box, get me a Cuba stout,
For things are running crossways, and Maggie and I are out.

We quarrelled about Havanas--we fought o'er a good cheroot,
And I knew she is exacting, and she says I am a brute.

Open the old cigar-box--let me consider a space;
In the soft blue veil of the vapour musing on Maggie's face.

Maggie is pretty to look at--Maggie's a loving lass,
But the prettiest cheeks must wrinkle, the truest of loves must pass.

There's peace in a Larranaga, there's calm in a Henry Clay;
But the best cigar in an hour is finished and thrown away--

Thrown away for another as perfect and ripe and brown--
But I could not throw away Maggie for fear o' the talk o' the town!

Maggie, my wife at fifty--grey and dour and old--
With never another Maggie to purchase for love or gold!

And the light of Days that have Been the dark of the Days that Are,
And Love's torch stinking and stale, like the butt of a dead cigar--

The butt of a dead cigar you are bound to keep in your pocket--
With never a new one to light tho' it's charred and black to the socket!

Open the old cigar-box--let me consider a while.
Here is a mild Manila--there is a wifely smile.

Which is the better portion--bondage bought with a ring,
Or a harem of dusky beauties, fifty tied in a string?

Counsellors cunning and silent--comforters true and tried,
And never a one of the fifty to sneer at a rival bride?

Thought in the early morning, solace in time of woes,
Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close,

This will the fifty give me, asking nought in return,
With only a Suttee's passion--to do their duty and burn.

This will the fifty give me. When they are spent and dead,
Five times other fifties shall be my servants instead.

The furrows of far-off Java, the isles of the Spanish Main,
When they hear my harem is empty will send me my brides again.

I will take no heed to their raiment, nor food for their mouths withal,
So long as the gulls are nesting, so long as the showers fall.

I will scent 'em with best vanilla, with tea will I temper their hides,
And the Moor and the Mormon shall envy who read of the tale of my brides.

For Maggie has written a letter to give me my choice between
The wee little whimpering Love and the great god Nick o' Teen.

And I have been servant of Love for barely a twelvemonth clear,
But I have been Priest of Cabanas a matter of seven year;

And the gloom of my bachelor days is flecked with the cheery light
Of stumps that I burned to Friendship and Pleasure and Work and Fight.

And I turn my eyes to the future that Maggie and I must prove,
But the only light on the marshes is the Will-o'-the-Wisp of Love.

Will it see me safe through my journey or leave me bogged in the mire?
Since a puff of tobacco can cloud it, shall I follow the fitful fire?

Open the old cigar-box--let me consider anew--
Old friends, and who is Maggie that I should abandon you?

A million surplus Maggies are willing to bear the yoke;
And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke.

Light me another Cuba--I hold to my first-sworn vows.
If Maggie will have no rival, I'll have no Maggie for Spouse!

Actually bought a playboy today just for the band lol. I'll be sure to post a review, but so far those hoyo excalibur series have been some of the best I've tried in a long time. These came in a 4 pack aimed at golfers. They are very good smokes for the money I feel. Plus you get a ball marker and a $10 gift card to golfsmith with it.

Hoyos' are fine cigars as are the Punch, and Partagas. yet I prefer the J.R. Special reserve double corona with the dark maduro wrapper.

Had several Cuban Choibus (Sp.) Churchills which were nice but greatly over hyped and PRICED

Have only smoked a few in the last 4 years. But I use to order them from J.R. Cigar (had the best deals). I liked the Hoyo Excaliber also, + the boxed pressed Maria Mancini and the Jose Marti Cuba Libre. I preferred the Toro size in what I smoked if it was available. J.R. Cigar's generic (they called them conterfit cigars) were probably some the best deals going in cigars at the time, for those who smoked a lot of cigars - the everyday cigar for those of us of moderate means. And people said I smoked a lot of cigars, I guess.

Isn't a Marsh Wheeling stogie what Clint Eastwood smoked in the "man w/ no name" spaghetti westerns?

As I remember, there was a stogie that was less than 6" long but burned very slowly and tasted great!

Cigars that go with "spaghetti westerns" reminded me of the old Italian guy that opened the first pizza joint in our small midwestern town back in the 50's. He always had one of those short crooked black and hard Italian cigars in his mouth. It seemed to be lit and smoking and he seemed to be smoking it! But when I found some and tried them I couldn't get them to draw! I almost got a hernia trying to light one and it seemed I couldn't get any air or smoke to pass through. Until....I found that if I drove an ice pick through them end to end, they smoked fine! I never asked him what his method was. But never bothered with them again.

I love to burn a good cigar when I'm able. I have tried a ton, but keep finding my way back to:

Padron Anniversario
A Fuente Short story

Padron being my all time favorate. After a steak from Ruth's Chris and a big glass of red, nothing beats Mr. Padron.

True very few things in life beat a good steak and a fine cigar. Except pairing that fine cigar with a fine bourbon.

I bought a Cohiba tonight to smoke tomorrow evening on the patio.

I don't smoke tobacco often, but am finishing a huge protracted project tomorrow.

Ahhhhhh, a timely topic.

Am in Saratoga, NY, for the races this weekend and yesterday (Friday) there were more cigar smokers out and about than one could imagine. Hooked up with some old friends and new plas and we drank beer and smoked cigars whilst sitting under a big old tree most of the afternoon.

On today's menu are: Cusano M1 (never smoked but given to me by a friend who thinks I will enjoy it)

Dunhill Peravia (my "go to" smoke)

Montecristo Churchill

Fonseca Cubano Limitado

Punch Robusto

Eleven (11) races today; the cigar to race ratio seems about perfect.

I also have a real Cohiba Esplendido for consumption in the rather unlikely event I get a "signer."

Enjoy the day and a fine cigar...or two.

Be safe.

I smoke everything from the big brands (when I KNOW I'll have time to enjoy the whole cigar) to cheap bundled cigars. I'm a fan of Camacho and Perdomo products, and lately I've been enjoying Puros Indios (Rolando Reyes).

Despite currently working in a town where the old saying "roll up the sidewalks at night" is pretty much true, the variety of cigar shops in this area is nothing short of amazing. I know of three within easy driving distance, and one is just around the corner from the Hotel. I love it! I am trying a playboy banded one tonight, about a rubusto size, looks to be a shade grown leaf. I will post a review tonight.

You might want to check out the website for JR Cigars. I smoke a few cigars and JR has good prices. If you get on their mailing list you will get a nice catalog with good descriptions and better prices. You may want to check out the JR Alternatives. Good Luck!

I don't smoke anymore, but two old favorites come to mind. The first is the Diplomat by Macanudo. If you can find one with the dark "Robust" wrapper that one was my favorite. I think however that they only make them with in Maduro and regular at present. The other is the Hemmingway Classic by Arturo Fuente-a magnificent smoke. The Hemmingwway is a good 1.5 to 2 hour smoke while the Diplomat is 45 minutes to an hour. Anouther good Robusto is the one made by Punch. If panetellas are your game than I suggest the Robust leaf Portifino by Macanudo. If you want to wow the ladies go with a Prince of Wales by Macanudo-a 8" 52 ring honkin' beast. You'll need a good two hours to work that one down to size
My goodness-but this thread do make me miss my sticks

+1, Check out the Consuegras from JR Cigar. IMO they can't be beat for an inexpensive smoke.

JR cigars has a very large cigar store about 15 miles from my office in New Jersey. They have a large variety of smokes and they have a bar restaurant that you can smoke in! I haven't been there in a while but this thread is making me want to go.

Default Cigar favorites

Ashton VSG and Padrón 1964 are excellent. But my absolute favorite blend is the CAO AMERICA. Pair one with a fine Kentucky bourbon, such as Knob Creek... can't get much more patriotic than that.

Cigar Aficionado web site has videos of cigar tips and techniques.

Anyone going to NRA 2011 Pittsburgh check out the Long Ash Club.

Good thread!

Well as promised, I tried the playboy out. Not a terrible smoke, but just wasn't any body or flavor to it. Just sort of sat there in my mouth. The band was pretty cool, but I think that's the last one I'm going to worry about smoking for a while now. I am hoping to try out some of the padron line. Ya'll keep talking them up and I haven't had one of them yet, so I might as well give it a shot. Worst case I like it and end up buying a box of them for myself lol.

The Cusano M I referenced in my above post turned out to be a lovely smoke. It was cool, flavorful, and held a long ash. Now gonna try to locate a retailer that stocks them. This one came from a little shop in New Hampshire, and the the giver cannot recall the name or even the town where he got it.

Be safe.

PS:

Nope, no "signer;" the Cohiba remained unlit.

Well now I've got another one I want to try out. That Cusano sounds really good to me. I have something of a preference for a good flavorful cigar. Not necessarily one that is overpowering, but not some bland tasteless smoke either.
