I went to a gun show today and was looking for something else when I ran across this nice 617 no dash, 4" barrel and Combat grips!. It felt a little loose but it looked to unused to have a real problem.

I bought it and when I got home I took it apart and did a quick clean up and stoned a few rough surfaces and WOW what a nice tight gun. I can't wait to see how it shoots tomorrow!

This is the first neat S&W I have bought in quite a while. Well not totally true. I did just get that 5" 629-3 a month ago. Yea it's been a while... a whole month!

That's a right purty one ya got there, a nice find! I know what you mean, if I dont buy something about every two week's I get the shake's.

Nice find, John! The combat grips look to be in great shape. I'd have liked to find a set of those on mine when I bought it. I know you'll enjoy shooting that gun. The full underlug design really stabilizes an already solid gun for the .22 LR cartridge.

What a great score! I am dying to find a 617.

Hey just an update. I shot the gun today and boy it shoots VERY well!
Now I have a 6" and 4" 617 . I will probally sell my 63 and my 6" 617 now as I just don't need 8 22LR handguns. I can't afford or have the space to keep them all.

The gun is very similar to the 4" 617-1 that I bought a few years ago. Mine is a wonderful shooter which I will never, ever, sell.

Congrats, nice looking gun. I like the combat stocks on the 617s.

OK now I have been shooting this gun some I have two questions.

1. I can hit a 1 1/2" swinger target about 10 to 11 times out of 12 shots at 60 ft. I have 20/15 vision but I NEED reading glasses. I can not shoot this good with any other handgun I have. Why am I shooting so good. This is an honest question.

2. The front of one chamber rubs on the back of the barrel. Shall I stone a couple of thousands off the the chamber where it rubs or is there a better way to do this?

I love this gun. I can hit my 50 yd swinger prairie dog target 4 out of 6 shots. This gun is just a pure joy to shoot.

1) These 617s can shoot & the light recoil of the 22lr makes them tack drivers..
2) I wouldn't stone the barrel or cylinder, see if there isn't a bit of front to back play in the cylinder,end shake, while it's closed, If there is you can have the yolk/crane stretched or use Power Custom end shake shims to move the cylinder to the rear a couple thousandths..
The cylinder gap on the one I had was only .002"-.003"..

I "HAD" the very same revolver & traded it for a 3" CS-1 M686 & have missed it more than any other handgun I've ever had..
