Beautiful revolver and I would bet that it shoots just as well as it looks.
Have your Dad write the history and keep it for your grandchildren.

Model 17
Very Nice,
I inherited a K-22 8 3/8 inch from my father. Best 22 revolver made in my opinion.

I have a beautiful 18-2 that I love, but kinda wish it had the longer barrel of a 17 like your dad's. Nice gun.

Not much use, it appears. I've shot it for one session at the range. In comparison, I do have a Colt .38 Officers Model that was my grandfather's in which the checkering is worn completely smooth.

My favorite S&W is a 1948 K22. Mine probably is in a little better shape than yours finish wise, and I shoot the snot out of it. I just clean it and never holster it.
I’ve owned nicer or near mint K22’s, and for some reason my 95% 1948 shooter is the one I always go to.
Thanks for posting,
Emory

Welcome to the forum. Lots of people here like the K-22 models, and the postwar five-screw guns are among the most desirable (that's four screws in the sideplate and one in the frame in front of the trigger guard). Yours is a fine example of a Pre-Model 17, which is the shorthand designation for guns with the same design as the Model 17, but which were manufactured before S&W assigned model numbers and began stamping them on the guns.
Make sure to give us a range report when you have a chance to take it out and see how it behaves.

I have a 1953, I think, K22 and a 17-3. Both are great guns and I know you will like yours. They are great guns.

My first 22 caliber S&W revolver was a K22 5 screw and it's still a favorite shooter of mine. Since aquiring it I've bought several more Model 17's and 18's and finally a 6 inch Model 617 no dash. I love shooting them as they are a blast and about as much fun as $18 will buy you these days for a brick of ammo to blast away with.
Congratulations and enjoy.

$18 a brick for ammo?????
Where do you live? I'll get a loan and come buy all the 22's in your area. It is a lot more than that here for the cheap stuff!!
