Default 2" 625-10 barrel installed with long cylinder? PICS ADDED

I'm considering having a 2" .45 ACP Model 625-10 barrel installed on a .45 ACP Model 625-4 frame. A couple of questions...

Is this a normal one piece barrel? My gunsmith thought it's a two piece barrel but I think (hope) he is wrong.

The 2" barrel was mated to a short .45 ACP cylinder, was it not? I presume that once the rear end of the barrel has been shortened to make it fit with the longer cylinder of the -4 and the forcing cone re-cut, the 2" barrel will then fit and function properly. Am I correct?

I have spare ejector rod (my original, actually) that looks like it had been removed by the previous owner with a pliers and the front is scarred. If this ejector rod is shortened, is there any reason it shouldn't work with the 2" barrel?

My revolver already has a ball lock installed on the crane. I expect that the cylinder should lock up just fine. Is there anything else I need to take into consideration?

Talking Steel

At least the shroud--if it is there, is steel, so in looking at my 625-10, the barrel looks like one piece.
I also checked the cylinder length, and it looks like you lose about 1/8th in barrel length too.

You may have a problem regulating the sights. The 625-10 had the "V" trench rear sight and dot front sight. Your rear sight may be 1/4-3/8" too high and the front sight dovetail is non-standard.

If the barrel looks like one piece, I'm assuming it IS one piece. I have seen a photo of the gun from the muzzle and I didn't see any nuts or screws holding multiple pieces in place. And Numrich wouldn't sell a two piece barrel... or would they?

And yes, I was going to ask about regulating the sights but I forgot. Numrich sells the barrel without a front sight but it is cut for a dovetail. I have the standard factory adjustable rear sight on my -4 so I was expecting to have to install something a little taller at the front. That's OK, but I was not expecting a non-standard dovetail cut. Does anybody know the dimensions?

I just had this revolver re-timed and the trigger stud was fixed so that it doesn't rotate in the frame. It currently has a 4" "carry comp" barrel that's really neat but I just can't deal with barrels longer than 3" anymore as carry guns. I can't think of any way to modify a 4" full lug barrel to make it shorter and practical. An all steel 2" .45 snub would be really neat and I could put a lot of rounds through it without worrying about cracking the frame.

Dave,

I have seen the 625-10 barrel and it is a one-piece. It was "bored out" and used as a shroud for a short barrel 41 mag. A ball detent was installed in the front of the crane and used the existing notch in the -10 barrel. The existing ejector rod was shortened to fit the slot.

It was a neat little package. Would like to do something like that myself one day. Hope this helps some.

I ordered the barrel and it should be here in a few days. My revolversmith is very capable and can do some tricky barrel work so I expect a trouble free installation. The barrel does not come with a front sight but I do not expect that to be much of a problem either.

DS,

I would like to see a pic when you get it finished. It sounds like a great idea.

Dave,

Have you gotten the barrel installed on your 625-4 yet? Just wondering.

I'm still waiting. I gave my 'smith the revolver, barrel and spare ejector rod that I had. He eyeballed it (and me) rather suspiciously and took a deep breath. He thinks he can do it but it will take some fine tuning. Getting the barrel to just fit properly and setting the cylinder gap will be the biggest challenge. He will re-cut the dovetail and use the front sight that I had been using. It's pretty tall and I'm hoping it will be a good match. Plus the barrel needs to be glass beaded to match the frame. It could take weeks or months, depending on how busy he is. I'm technologically challenged but I'll attempt to post some pics if and when everything works out OK.

Dave,

Any word yet on your re-barreling? Pics?

I'll try to get a pic of the 657 that used the 625-10 barrel as a shroud. I'm computer challenged so it might take a little bit.

Still no word yet. I'm not terribly worried, since it took longer to do some work on my 627 and this project is a bit more complicated.

Default UPDATE

The hired help at the shop told me today via phone conversation that my revolver is finished with the exception of the front sight. Apparently everything has come together nicely but he is having trouble finding a front sight that is tall enough to regulate properly with the adjustable rear. I am willing to have the original dovetail re-cut if necessary. Does anybody have any suggestions? All I want is a simple serrated ramp and nothing fancy. Who makes the tallest front sight (either finished or in blank form) that can be dovetailed?

The gunsmith will be out of the shop until next week and then I'll have a chance to talk to him about this.

Dave,

Years ago I had much the same problem when I was trying to sight-in a 3" FA 454 Casull. I contacted Ashley Outdoors (before they became XS sights), Ashley Emerson was always happy to help me with solving my sight problems (Ruger No 1 and T/C Hawken). He suggested I try a tall sight that they made for a levergun - I don't remember which one. It was exactly what I needed, it required a little bit of fine tuning, it is still working great.
The other thing I can think of is: Bowen. He may have a blank sight tall enough for what you need.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Still working on that pic.

Those are some good suggestions. I have been advised that Dawson Precision also carries a very large selection of front sights and can make to specification as necessary. I'm sure I'll be able to find something. But for now it appears the hard part is done already.

I just got the gun back and my initial impression is that it is a stunning success. The hangup was the front sight which broke once during fabrication. My 'smith decided to keep the original smaller PC dovetail cut and weld up an original sight, or at least I think it started out as an original sight. The sight is definitely tall and my initial impression is that it might be a bit too tall. Accuracy with my 230 gr. LRN USPSA loads is excellent. I want to try it with 255 gr. loads and make sure that the front sight is squared away, and then I'll attempt to post pics and comment on any shortcomings I notice. I don't think there were any problems fitting the barrel. Handling and weight distribution with the steel frame are much better than I had anticipated. I have a feeling this will be my favorite 625.

Dave,

I know waiting is the hardest part but it sounds like you are happy with results. I know the 657 I shot with the short barrel was balanced "just right" for my tastes too.

I'll try to get my son to snap a pic for me, because he has it and I'll try to get it posted here to let you see.

Default Pics

Here are some cell phone pics. This is a first for me on the forum, so please be patient.

The front sight is .420" tall and .145" wide. There is not a lot of daylight between it and the rear notch so I might have to thin it down just a bit. Also, note the ball lock on the crane. This is necessary since the short barrel negates the lockup at the front of the rod.

I did some work with it yesterday at 50 yards and it is an accurate and consistent performer, especially with heavy jacketed bullets. The only bullet it does not like are my own cast 255 gr. SWC from the RCBS mold. Almost half keyhole on target, which is odd. My 3" and 4" 625s shoot them extremely well.

All said and done, I'm very happy with it. The angle of that front sight is very steep and a half moon configuration would be better. However, the sight would have to run right up against the front of the frame, making it an expensive proposition that would have to be machined from bar stock.
