Expendables
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.
I went on cheapy movie night with a very lowered bar of expectation-due primarily to the personell but still wanting to see some mindless violence (and also I had a hankering for some "Movie Popcorn"). It was BAD. The plot was ridiculous, the computer generated blow ups and fire were annoying and the girl wasn't all that good looking. About the only thing that was any good was the fact that a lot of it was filmed in New Orleans and it was fun to guess the places. Someone needs to tell these guys that the guns need to be reloaded at a minimum after 5 minutes of sustained fire. There were two good lines in the scene with Ahhhhnald and Bruce Willis but that was it. I could have had more fum watching a re run of Rambo II. The thing that really makes me mad is that my wife wanted to see "Eat Pray and whatever " with Julia Roberts and I pulled rank to see the Expendables so the next time I have to go to HER pick

Caj, does that mean you have to see two bad movies in a row?

I thought the computer generated explosions really looked fake, and also took notice of the extended fire without reloading. Other than that there was some real good kick a_ _ action, the theater had the sound system at max volume and the sound track really shook the place.

I keep waiting for theaters to come out with Closed Captioning runners across the bottom.
Seems to me that it would be a good move to bring in hearing impaired customers.
But more than that, the movies of the last 20 years have really cranked up the volume of explosions and gunfire, often over the dialogue. Or the dialogue is spoken so rapidly you can't catch it. Or the actor(s) mumble. Or the microphone is poorly placed. Or the sound editing is done on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon.
Who knows the cause?
But watch the older movies and you'll hear the gunfire and explosions lowered while the actors speak, so you can hear what is being said.
I'd like to see CC on movie theaters. Seems to me it could be done with the newest medium for movies: digital.
Might be difficult to do with film, which remains the most-used medium, but adding it to digital would be a good start.
And no, I'm not hearing impaired. A recent check revealed a very slight loss of high-tone hearing in my left ear, but my right ear is fine. At 55, I'll accept that.
And no, I don't go into the theater still wearing my ear plugs from the range -- though if movies continue to blast me with high decibel explosions and gunfire I may start doing so.
Hmmmmmmmmm ... wonder how much longer it will be before we'll start seeing, "Hearing Damage May Result From Viewing This Movie ... blah blah blah" signs at the theater entry?
Surprised the lawyers haven't picked up on this yet.

Maybe I won't waste my $ renting that one when it comes out on disc. With two teenage daughters at home my house is CHICK FLICK CENTRAL. And my wife will rarely go out to a movie with me. I did pick up the full set of Victory at Sea series on DVD for $6 so I can watch those when the women folk aren't around.

I dunno.. I often stop by the old rental store where I once worked and have heard it's getting good reviews from the local movie aficionados.
I don't go to the theatre any more. And yes, I spelled it "theatre". I wait until they come out on DVD. I get them a week or two early from a friend from the store since they get to watch the pre-street rentals early.
The new Romero Zombie flick is coming out on Tues. Survival of the Dead. Not his best, but fun.

Its an action flick. It doesn't require a plot or good acting. Just lots of guns and explosions.
Don't think about it, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I liked it.

I agree, a complete waste of time and money.
The acting was terrible, fight scenes were really bad, and the unlimited amount of firing without reloading. I really could not tell what the plot was, if there was one.
Many of the scenes were dark and you could hardly tell what was going on.
I guess that Chuck Norris and Vandamn passed on the movie, can't blame them.

I agree with that statement. That was the best part of the whole movie.

+1 on the ridiculous sound levels of movies today! Theaters invest a lot of money in complex sound systems these days and I support they want you to "feel" the sound as well as hear it. Another reason not to waste my time in theaters.

Took my soon to be 14 year old boy to this movie last weekend. Believe it or not, those 80's action guys are a hit with the younger generation now, especially Bruce Willis.

Saw it tonite - enjoyed it as a mindless escape and action shoot-em-up. Can't recall ever seeing one of these action hero movies that didn't require a healthy suspension of belief.
Jet Li playing comic relief was different. They usually film his movies to make him look tall and thin, but there was no hiding how small he is beside these guys, especially a moose like Lundgren. First thing I ever seen Jason Staham in that I liked his character/performance. And Stallone's dig at Ahnold about wanting to be president was priceless . . .
Not high art but I got what I expected out of it and it wasn't nearly as cheesy as a lot of these things can be. YMMV

Come on guys! It has Bruce Willis in it. Have you ever tried to count the number of shots he fires in one of the Diehard movies and then figured the logistics on how in the world he carried that much ammo with him? And his method of carrying the cases of ammo was not visible?

Doc Holiday fired 3 shots from a double barrel in Toombstone so it's possible Bruce could fire off 5-6 thousand rounds without reloading...I thought it was a decent movie and enjoyed it but didn't enjoy putting out $28.00 for 2 tickets and then another $32.00 for nachos drinks, candy and popcorn for my son and I to see it...I could have bought 3-4 DVD's for that same amount...Next time I'll wait and buy the DVD unless it's something you just have to see on the big screen...

I made the mistake of seeing it before I read this thread, I want those 2 hours of my life back....
I took my wife to the picture show, she went to see "Switched" or something with Jennifer Anniston of course, and I had to wait to watch Stallone save the day fanning a SAA smokewagon....
Forget it, save your money and go see Jennifer Anniston....
