New M&P 15-22 fired OOB today- pics
Hey Guys,
I bought a new M&P 15-22 today - this is what happened on the third mag. Looks like a common issue after researching - wish I had known this earlier. I've always been a S&W fan but this one is leaving a bad taste.....

Sorry about your rifle man. What kind of ammo were you using?
I just fired mine for the first time last weekend, no issues...yet.
I bought mine, then found out about the problems S&W was having with the M&P15-22, and was very apprehensive to shoot mine. It took me 5 months to get out and shoot it, and I was relieved when I did. Looks like yours did not fair to well.

The gunshop said that they have had good results with Winchester Wildcat ammo - 1000's of rounds through the 15-22's with no problems. I tried them too. I found other posts that had the same results with all types of ammo.
My boys (12 & 9) love to shoot the AR-15's so I thought this would be the "cheaper" route to satisfy the need to pull the trigger. I will most likely look for a dedicated 22 upper.

What are the first three letters of the serial number? It may be brand new off the shelf, but it may have been on that shelf for a while and be part of a bad run S&W put out.
It's unfortunate that you experienced a failure like this, but Smith and Wesson will make it right regardless of when the gun was made. It may take some time, but don't count the gun out just yet.
If you do decide the S&W isn't for you anymore I hope you can recoup most of what you paid for it.

The serial no. is DTH9XXX - I haven't looked to see the age of the rifle but I will find out soon. Thanks for the insight.

ines DTU, and I bought it last Feb. From the info on this forum yours isn't new in age, even though your the first owner. Check out some of the others threads and you'll see how easy it is to return it, free of charge, and never, EVER, have a problem again. Really sucks and sorry for your luck, but return it, and enjoy. It's kinda like a new model car, a year or so after it comes out they finally get the kinks out of it. I too jumped on the band wagon, fortunatly I haven't had a problem aside of the occasional mag snag. It is an awsome rifle, and S&W is still a top notch company. It's just a new product. Is your mag 1st or 2nd gen? Does it have stamped on it 22LR, or does it have both 22LR and 25RD? I'm guesing it only has 22LR.

The DT serial/models had the most amount of issues, it may be new off the shelf as stated before, but its no where the newest model.
For example I have a DUU serial number with a mfg. date of the end of June 2010. Just call S&W and the will take care of you in a relatively quick turn around time. Sorry this happend to you, as it does suck. But at least the rifle will be repaired for free.
I have a good freind that works at a local gun shop. They have about 10 or so new on the wall or new in the back room( still boxed up) 15 22's, and ALL of them are the DTH-DTX models. He told me once people handle the rifles and inspect the boxes and see the serials, they hand them back over. And they are unable to sale even ONE of the older serial numbers for at least 2 months now. I suppose out of people being affraid to buy the older ones.

S&W will make it right.
DTH-series is probably at least a year old. I purchased a DTM-series last fall (probably before Thanksgiving) and the S&W serial numbers are running in sequence making yours 4000+ or so prior to mine.
Same thing happened to my rifle at roughly round 350. Extractor gone and just the spring and detent remaining. Mine was at S&W less than two weeks and returned to me "updated to latest specs" or similar. No cost and only a minor inconvenience.
Email or call S&W on Monday for a FedEx call tag. They'll ship the rifle both ways at their expense and return it directly to you. Be sure it ships back to a place an adult will sign for it.
Send your magazine(s) as well as there's a later magazine and they'll swap them out for new. I still have six "old" magazines that are working perfectly, but may don't.
I'm pushing 2000 rounds thru the rifle (1700 since its return) with no issues.

Count yourself as one of the lucky people that have the earlier models, and have had no issues. There are a few here that are the same way, but alot that arent as lucky.

Thanks for all the info - this forum is great. I've managed to calm down today but yesterday I was HOT. Paid $425 for a rifle that blew up with less than 100 rounds through it. I'm so glad that it happened with me and not one of my kids. No real damage other than ringing ears --- I know, I should have had ear protection on as the kids had theirs on.

Yea man you just got one of the older ones before they made the reliability updates. I have a newer DTZ with about 2000 rounds through it and not a single problem (nothing compared to belfeds 20,000 but I'm working on it!). When you send them your gun they will install the upgraded parts and it will be as reliable as it should be. They will likely give you a couple free mags for your trouble. Just give them a chance and they will take care of you.

Is there a link to a table or site that will tell when these were manufactured? I just bought two ... a DTU and a DTM. The DTM came with a mag that only had 22LR on it. The DTU's mag had '25 Round' on it also.
Thanks

Just do as I did. I have a DUU serial model rifle, and I was also curious to its manufacture date. ( new to the M&P 15 22 at the time). So I called S&W, and asked them about it, provided the lady with my serial number of my rifle and asked about its manufacture date. The lady on the phone was able to look up my rifle within seconds and she then told me that it was the made on June 28 2010. Pretty good, seeing how I bought the rifle in the middle of July 2010.
Also ANY mag that has ONLY 22 LR is the OLD first generation mags. S&W WONT replace them( I could be wrong, just what I've read online) I have heard as they are still considered by S&W as" in working order with the 15 22" but the newer mags with the 22LR AND 25 Round stamped on them have had ALOT less problem reports due to them.

We're getting conflicting information on replacement of the "old" magazines. Replacements have been reported a few times here. No one has reported getting old magazines back recently if they sent old with a malfunctioning rifle.
As noted earlier I purchased my DTM-serial about Thanksgiving last year so it's definitely "new old stock." As an aside I purchased a new HK P2000SK pistol at a dealer earlier this month that had an AI date code: 2008 proof.

I just spoke with a very nice Cust Serv person at S&W who said my DTM date was 11/12/09 and my DTU was 12/3/09. Somewhere between those dates they must have gone to the blue springs because one has them and one doesn't.
According to her they made modifications for the extraction/ejection problem around Feb 1st of 2010.

Called S&W this morning and they are sending me a shipping label.
Should I try to demand a new rifle or let them repair the one I have?

Yours will come back totally to new spec, so I wouldn't be concerned about getting an all new rifle. There were three issues. The first was they replaced the extractor with a new non-rotating one. I'm surprised you even found yours when the big bang happened. Yours looks to be the old rotating type. Second, they changed the spring tension on springs in the lower and on the bolt - the blue springs are the new version (and from what I hear the blue disappears over time with cleaning). Third, some bolts were not machined correctly.
I've got an old DTX and it has been rock solid, but it came with the non-rotating extractor.
Good luck and I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised when S&W makes it right for you.

I have a DTH and purchased it about 6 months ago. I had to send it back because of continuous mag snags so I sent the mags along with it. They replaced the mags with the newer versions and since getting it back I have had not one issue whatsoever. I even pulled the blue springs out of it and installed the JP springs and still no issues.
I'm starting to think the bolts, extractors and the mags were the main issues and not so much the springs. In any case S&W made it right in good fashion and fast return service.
NOTE: I've run with the 1st gen springs, blue springs, JP springs and even the 15 minute trigger job clipped spring and have not noticed any difference performance wise with any of these combos. I'm now running the JP's which I feel is the best of all of them.

"Demand a new rifle?" Please, I'm laughing too hard. You're not in a position to demand anything. Read the warranty, it's all at S&W's discretion.
Regardless, the experiences with S&W customer service and warranty repair have been first class here. Your rifle should work fine when you get it back. Only hassle is the time your rifle is away.
