Talking At the range

Earlier this week my sister-in-law asked if I would mind taking her oldest son to the range with me. I picked him up about noon today and we went to Shooter's.

He never fired any type of firearm so I gave him some lessons on safety and sight pictures. We rented the Walther P-22 and started out with it. I showed him how to grip the pistol and how to load and where the safety was. We fired about 100 rounds of .22 through it. After that we rented the S&W M&P 22 and fired that for awhile. Then the last gun we shot was the FNH 9mm. He had quite a bit of fune.

he did ask and did look at the compound bows and I did speak to his mother about signing him up for the Hunter's safety course this year. We will probably go agian Labor day weekend and on September 1st I have set him up with a bow guy to take some lessons.

Good for you. I started showing my boy @ an earlier age the mechanics and handling of my pistols. He is almost 14 now and can shoot and field strip everything in the inventory. Plus the mystic is gone about a "forbidden" firearm, reducing the likelihood of violating any rules.

You did well. More people should work with the youth of today in taking an interest in them so they can be the future safe shooters like we have today.

Great job. You started him out light, with all the basics, and stepped up the 9mm. But what's this about bows?? jk of course.

Last year I took my wife's boss's son to range for his first shooting experience...he was 13 at the time (his dad has no interest in firearms). After explaining the safety and sighting basics he got to shoot a .22, a 9mm and a .45 ACP. He absolutely fell in love with the experience and has hardly talked of anything else for the last year (according to his parents). Last week, out of the blue I got an email from his dad inviting me to his 14th birthday at the range. His parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday and all he wanted was a trip to the shooting range with his dad and Stan (me). Needless to say we'll head that direction on the 18th of Sept. I feel very fortunate that I was able to make such and impression on him that he wanted to go back to the range with me. Looks like I've got a little addict on my hands. Woo Hoo!
