3914 Question(s)
Why are 3914 models so much cheaper than the 3913?
I am looking at one that is very lightly used. I can get it for a little over half the price of a 3913 in similar condition.
Are there reasons to stay away from a 3914?
Thanks.

3914s should be close in price the 3913s. Nlued slide vs srainless, both have alloy frames (blue vs silver).
If the 3914 is half the price of the 3913, ine gun is too cheap or the other too expensive.
Is the 3913 a TSW? That might add a little extra to the price.

Clang is correct. Either the 3914 is a steal - or the 3913 is way over priced. I own a sample of each and find them absolutely identical in performance. The finish is the only difference - and I could make a good argument for favoring either one. I would guess a middling price for either model would be around $475.
Good Luck,
Jerry

I loved my 3914 I was an idiot to let it go. What an easy gun to carry and shoot.

Maybe people value the stainless finish more than blued? It's really just a matter of preference to me.

I think one of the reasons is that most people don't even know about the 3914. The 3913 gets, or got, a lot of press as approaching the beau ideal of a carry pistol. I don't remember reading any articles in the mainstream gun press about the 3914 in particular. Most people go with what is fed to them: hey, the 3913 is great!
Remember, this is a specialized forum focusing on S&W pistols. We've spent the time to learn more about the various models, because we're interested in S&W pistols.
I'd wager that the percentage of people who search Gunbroker.com or other auction sites for "3914" is half, or less, than that of people who search for "3913." Heck, I've made that kind of mistake myself, and I know a little about S&W autopistols. (Just a little.)

When the 3914 was in production, S&W did not use any type of protective finish (like tennifer, melonite, bruniton, nitron, etc). It is just plain old fashioned bluing on carbon steel. Many folks viewed this to be a poor choice for a concealable handgun that would most likely see a lot of perspiration.
Most blued/carbon steel models were dropped from production in the early nineties. Later variations used a black finish on top of stainless steel.

I have had one since they were first offered and have had no problems with it as long as you use a good holster (leather not plastic) and clean it regularly. I also have its stablemate, the 3953, again, no problems. Dave_n

Just buy it. It is arguably the best CCW framed 9mm ever made by Smith. Remakably reliable, accurate to the sights, light and easy carrying, and a pleasure to shoot. It (3914) has been by primary CCW piece since I purchased it new in the mid-90's from the LAPD store. Just buy it while you are able.
