Free Gun Or Proactive Manufacturer
Over on another forum a member started a thread about his Python which was sent back to Colt for rebluing and tuning. When it returned he took it to the range to try it out and had many light strikes/non-fires. His new thread questioned whether or not to send it back to Colt to be fixed.
A later posting stated that a forum member contacted him and introduced himself as an employee of Colt who monitored forums to try and "stay ahead of problems". He gave the guy an e-mail, phone and address (P.O. box where Colt's "special return facility" is located) to ship the gun back and sent a FedEx call tag to pick it up. The poster was happy that his gun was going to be fixed and he didn't even have to contact Colt. Said he checked it all out and the addresses looked legit.
I may be wrong here but either this is one gullible person who used to own a Colt Python or Colt is really ahead of the game in customer service. Hope I'm way wrong on my suspicions.

Uh, tell this guy to repeat after me: B-O-O-O-G-G-G-U-U-U-S-S-S!!!!
Bye bye Python. The sensible thing is to call Colt and ask them if this is legit. Next call should be to BATFE.

Does he have anymore guns? Just kiddin! I hope we are all wrong also, but I got a bad feeling of this! Is he just that upset about his gun troubles that he can't see all the "RED FLAGS"? I hope it works out for him! Did he say he shipped it?

I don't trust unless I look up the number and dial it myself. These days you can't be either too careful or too skeptical.

Yes, he shipped it. He's convinced that it's all legit. I really hope he is right. The gun after the re-blue and grip refinish was really nice. Man, I don't want to read later that someone got his gun for the cost of a FedEx shipment.
My main point was that before I shipped a gun I would at least call Colt to verify that the guy was a true rep of the company.

I bet it is a legit call. Getting a gun at a given address would be easy to trace. Getting a gun by way of an internet message and having it shipped interstate will get someone federal time. Federal time is also without parole. Then we have the fact it was a gun which will add more time. Not many want to serve 20 yrs on a gun charge.

Since when is a PO box legit?
Shipping to an FFL is to the listed address on the license which is always the physical address. (Might be different for shipping to a gunsmith for repairs but doubt it)
When I buy something online and the shipping is through UPS or FEDEX there is always a statement that a physical address is needed since they can't ship to a PO box.
So the "PO box" is most likely a rental not located in a post office if Fedex or UPS can deliver to it. Yeah lots of red flags on this one.

I just went to the forum and read the thread. It is a little unclear to me. I will watch the thread. Sounds fishy, but if illegal, couldnt it be traced right to where it was sent? Like oldman says, who would take such a chance against so many counts with hard time? I agree it looks fishy, all the same.

As does any legit company, Colt clearly lists the factory location and instructions on it's website. This is the address of the factory not some secret location. I feel sorry for the guy.
I found the post. I did not realize Colt had a PO Box in Newark NJ????

If I had a $50 dollar bill for all the bogus, shipping scams that take place every day in America, I could retire in about a week...on my own Greek island.
I am not saying it ISN'T legit, but there are enough BS scams that involve shipping goods to addresses that appear legit for me to wanna do a thorough background....LONG before I ship anything to anyone...

It is done every day....hard time scares the you know what out of me and you, but to some people, the idea of hard time is the cost of doing business, if you get caught.....

Even getting a P.O. Box, someone had to show a valid photo ID with a physical address.

This is so easy. You have the gun shipped to a real address. The gun disappears. The idiot shipper calls the cops, long after the fact. The police get there. It's a rental of some sort. The owner or neighbors say, "yeah, he was here, but he moved with no forwarding address." Or, "no one here by that name." No one knows his real name. Duh.
This poor man needs to call BATFE at once if for no other reason that he'll want to be off the hook after the gun shows up at a crime scene and BATFE does a trace back to him.

of course, and it no doubt belongs to a Momma or Aunt, or someone else who is removed from whatever gets shipped there.
She knows nothing, doesn't know who picks up her mail, never heard of getting a gun in the mail.....
ATF doesn't care cause it is one gun, and the US Attorney isn't gonna get all riled up over one gun...local cops don't care much cause the person who shipped the gun doesn't live in Newark, and even if they did they wouldn't care much.....
IF it has been diverted, then the owner will find out when some cop somewhere seizes it from a thug incidental or arrest, or dropped at a crime scene.

I hope he actually sent it to the Colt adress and was just kidding about the P.O. Box. Either way, I'd still call Colt to verify first. It would save lots of tears later.

Well that is better. At first he said it went to:
"It's all good, the FedEx mailing label gave a P.O. Box in Newark, New Jersey, that's where he said Colt's special return facility is located."

The Newark thing was a joke. He was just goofing with the other forum members. He even put a gaping-mouth, big-eyed "eek" face after it
The whole thing feels legitimate to me. Props to Colt for spotting a PR issue before it went hugely sour and taking steps to keep a customer happy.
