Default Where does an extractor bend?

I recently acquired a 17-2 that showed little evidence of being used. On firing the gun at home I found two cylinder were dragging and discovered a wobbly/bent extractor rod was bearing on the underbarrel bolt. I replaced and fitted a new extractor rod but the problem remained. Only by screwing the extractor into the extractor rod and chucking it in a drill is the wobble noticeable. Does an extractor rod 'bend' at the point just ahead of the threads? Could the extractor itself be tapped offcenter? Are the extractor and rod screwed together when you attempt to straighten them? I don't quite know what to do. I have no dial indicator but I am willing to get one if needed. Nor do I have a yoke allignment tool, but the cylinder locks up and releases smoothly. Thank you for any suggestions.

I doubt a new rod would be bent or threaded off center, It sounds like the problem must be in the extractor. I have never tried straightening one. If you have a new (straight) rod, I'm not sure I would try to bend it to compensate for a problem in the extractor. I would replace the extractor.

Do you have another gun (same frame size) you could borrow the extractor from to see if it works with the new rod? That would isolate the source of the problem.

This is a thread I posted about building a tool to check and correct run-out on a S&W extractor.

Bent Ejector Rod

Went from 0.025" TIR to 0.003" and fixed a heavy trigger pull on three chambers.

Bountyjunter, swaping parts is a good idea. Haggis, nice setup. Quess I'll have to get a dial indicator. Thank you both.
