Thumbs up Would like some info on the Model 12 please+++Pictures Added 10/12/10+++

Saw a real nice one at the shop. From what I know, it is the alloy version of the M 10, 6 shot so I am guessing it's a K frame?
This one is in excellent condition with box and wondered if they are desirable/collectible? I guess everything is collectible to someone

Just didn't know about the lightweight/alloy frame and what would be a good price.

Any other info or fun facts appreciated.

Thanks

Hi neighbor. Yes the model 12s are collectible in the higher conditions.
But even better than that ,the make great lightweight
carry guns for our hot summers down here.

Here is a likk to thread on one I just found a couple months back.
Model 12-1 FRPD 1961 ,cool gun.

What were they asking $ for it. and what was your appraisal of the condition?

Allen

You are correct, it's a K frame but early versions (IIRC through -3) have a narrower frame so the grips don't interchange. The 2" Model 12 "no dash" I picked up for a little over $400 a while back has some minor finish blems but it's an excellent shooter. Like any vintage Smith they are collectable, especially early issue guns that also had alloy cylinders. There's one on an auction site that's listed for something like $3200...

I only got a real quick look at it and do not recall the dash if any. From my casual glance, I would say LNIB. I'll go back and give it my"Inspector 12" look. I really weird him out when I bring my magnifying glass, bore light, Fenix flashlight and feeler gauges

What barrel length? I have a 4 screw 2" that is a sweet carry gun. Everyone who has one feels the same way.
We're all curious as to the asking price, let us know all the details.

Its a snubby 2" or 1-7/8. It is also a dash-2 so can anyone date it from that?

I am not sure of what I can get it for yet but around $400.
Is that good?

If it's in good shape I'd say you did good.
The -2 was made from 1962 to 1977. If you give a serial number we can get a birth year for you. You can xx the last few numbers for privacy.
The 2" M12 is a great carry gun, I think you'll enjoy it.

I'll go over tomorrow and get all the details and check it over. I buy all my guns there so he would not show me anything that is not good. As I mentioned it has the box with the handwritten numbers on the edge which is also excellent shape.

So you guys are talking me into buying it.? I'm weak.

I've tried that one a long time ago, she doesn't go for it.
I actually think she has given up, now it's more of a guilt trip.

Maybe I can trade a gun.......... Not!

I'm still looking for a 2-inch M12; thinking of a 12-4 so regular K-frame grips will fit.

I have a 12-2 made 1966-7. Two inch RB With the box, tools but the instruction sheet was gone. Like new. Shoots grate. Gave 349.00 for it.( Look for cracks by forcing cone.) I also got a 37 made 1966-7 in same condition with the box and all that comes with it for $329.00 Three inch SB. Also shoots grate. Both from the same estate. Each box is SN to the gun and so are the grips.

$400 would be a fair price. I would shure get a second for that price.

Well I went and put a deposit on the gun. It is LNIB, if I had to give it a number a solid 95+%.

It is a 12-2, serial D2392**, 4 screws.

No pictures yet as it was just traded in, so it has to wait 30 days due to pawn shop regulations.

Can someone date it from the serial number?

Thanks

Congratulations, you're going to like that one.
The catalog dates it at late '69 or early '70.
I think you got a really good deal!

Me again, just re-read your last post and wanted to comment that isn't a 4 screw if it's a 12-2. The triggerguard screw was dropped with the 12-1 in '62.

I counted 3 visible, one being the mainspring screw. two on the side plate . There is not another under the grip? Oh well, it's close to as new with box and destructions, even has a M 10 instruction manual.

P&Rfan, thanks for the date. OMG, does that mean my post will be moved to the other section??

XFuzz, Nice picture, looks just like yours. Where can I get one of those prop rods? Those always look so nice.

My 12-2 has the best DA of any of my K frames. The serial # is D4758xx. Would love to know its DOB if someone has the time to check. I've had it at least 30-35 years. It's the one gun my wife doesn't mind carrying in her purse.

What they are trying to tell you is the gun is considered a 3-screw. The mainspring strain screw is never counted.

Strictly the M&P Airweight and models 12 to 12-3 are built on the KA frame. While the A does designate Aluminum, there are also dimensional differences between the K and KA.

I got a good deal on this M-12 a month ago as the gunshop owner thought the grips were some of the ugliest he had ever seen.

Ahh. OK, Thanks. Yes, it would be a 3 screw Airweight.

Fkimble, your gun dates to 1973 according to the catalog.
Hope this helps.

Well, they probably were, but it's still a great gun, and you'll probably find some factory grips some day, and maybe a Tyler at a reasonable price. Meanwhile, you could probably make the present grips uglier by putting skateboard tape on them.

I found a Model 12-3 with nickel finish. Perfect shape. It's basically a mirror, lol. 2" barrel. i was going to sell it but it just fits me perfect for concealed carry. only paid 250 for it.

Nice M12s! I'm still looking for one I like and want ($$) for CC. I REALLY want a pinned-barrel version too!

But another reason I want to get a -4, besides the grip-size issue, is that the hammer, (and trigger I think) are standard size, like a regular K-frame. That way, if someone (me, maybe) wanted to have a polished trigger and/or a bobbed hammer installed, it might be easier to find and modify them, and save the originals. My quest continues!
