the model 58, huh?
A dealer has a like new 1966 model 58. I love the revolver but know the 41 magnum has not ever been top of the charts. However a very nice 58 might be worth considering. What do you think about this gun?`

The 41 magnum is a very good cartridge to hunt with or do anything with. It is also very accurate. It would be better IMO if you reloaded for it as ammo is high and not as easy to find as other ammo. Don

It's a nice gun, kind of a model 10-6 on steroids. They have also become moderately popular collector guns. What is the dealer asking for it (and don't worry, I won't steal it from under you )?

41's
The 58 is just outstanding....if you want to shoot a lot, you need to reload or be independently wealthy
I have recently acquired 2 58's here on the forum, one nickle, on blue....you can see my two on my posts here Sacrilige? and here Finally found my 58 - Updated with Range Report 9-9
These are not my first 41's....I have 3 other 657's with 3" barrels, and one mountain gun. They are all fantastically accurate. I even have a Marlin 1894 in 41 to match. You can load them up to 265 gr and maybe bigger, and you can get a lot energy out of them. I am sold on the 41 round, and have converted several other folks to it as well.
How much does your dealer want? did you get some photos for us? I'm sure that someone here wants it if you decide to pass.
Good luck, and let us know what happens with it.

Okay, my guy is high, as usual, and wants in excess of $1100.00 for the 58. Now it is nice, in the box from 1966, but I know he is high, very high. It just made me more curious about the 58.

There is a NEW on on Gunbroker right now with a Buy Now price of $759.99
Even after shipping and FFL fees that sure beats 'your guy'.

Yup, sounds high to me....I recall seeing NIB on GB for about a grand...box, papers, unfired....I got lucky and found a 2 within a few months...your number will come up sometime soon...hang in there until then....unless money is no object, then go for it

I found my 58 on the BST forum here. I imagine that if you post a WTB ad, you will find one eventually that you can live with at a better price than you were quoted by "your guy"....there are a lot of "closet" 58 owners that prowl this forum

What 'other' calibers does the 58 come in?
And there is nothing wrong with the 41....

The model 58 IS a 41 mag - if it came in another caliber it would be a different model designation. At $1100 it is priced to let everyone know he owns it - but at $600 - $700, then it would be priced to sell.

I bought this post obama. I didn't know a lot about the 58 and hoped I wasn't paying too much for it. I found the reciept about a week ago and was tickled to see that it was within my price range. I really wanted a 57 but found this one at the time. And just bought it because it was a 41 mag. The pawn shop is known for being too high on its guns at least by people who know what they're looking for or are precived to know what they are worth. When I bought the gun i bought his last box of 41's and blew the dust off it. Doeboy

Touch off a full power .41 magnum round in a Model 58 with the stock Magna grips and you'll see why it fell out of favor quickly.

I carried one on duty back in the 70's. Wish I still had it. I've had several since then and the one I have now is marked "SAPD". I paid $500.00 six months ago.

The 58 was a commercial flop. Too big and powerful for inexperienced shooters and women the police market was a bust. The 57 was better for sport leaving the 58 in limbo.
The 41 is OK but there's noting it can do that the 44 doesn't do better. There is a cult following for the 58 driving prices beyond reason.

Well, there you have it.
(Actually, I tend to agree with all that - but hesitate to throw that much water on the Model 58 Parade. )
$1100 is way too much for one of those things, but it is fairly early production and would be a nice gun to look at. Maybe he'll come down after it has sat there for a while.
When it comes to shooting magnums with those magna-style stocks, I agree...

There are numerous threads about the 58 that have appeared here lately. Do a search and you should find a wealth of comments.
I recently acquired S 2569XX with no box and tools for $850 shipped. It is near mint and a first year gun. I agree that $1,000 seems a tad high in this economy.
I would suggest, assuming that you really want the gun, to do a search on a site like Gunbroker for sold 58's. Pick out a few examples of similar guns to the one that you are looking at and then print copies of the listings. Take them to your "gun pusher" and show him what is available in the real world. Perhaps he will be more reasonable once he sees what the market price really is. If not, you've only wasted about an hour of your time.

You won't be wasting time at the dealer because I can guarantee that tactics like this would probably get you run out of any dealer's shop that I know of - pronto. Especially if his other customers can overhear the conversation.
But you will know the market value.

Since I acquired this one with an S serial number I've managed to find the correct diamond PC grips (yeah, I know) and have these magnas on my 25-5. Believe it or not it also came with diamond target stocks in the box, so I think it was either special ordered or more likely modified (w/ semi target hammer) for an experienced shooter. Or maybe they were just short of hammers that day and needed to ship the order. After all, who'd complain they got a better hammer?

Bought this one new for $81.00. Carried it as a duty weapon for 13 years.
We "seen the elephant" a few times. You don't have enough money to buy it.

This one is an N number that I traded HandEjector for at the Richmond meeting. I had Smith renickel it and now it is too pretty to shoot.

Was the original Model 58 made on the same frame as the Model 29?
And are the fixed sights regulated for the old, standard-velocity police load (210gr 965fps) or the faster magnums (210gr 1300fps)?
Somewhere I read that the original 58's were made from 38/44 frames, which were noticeably beefed up for the Model 29. I could be wrong, but there's something more appealing to me about the looks of a 41 than a 44.

Pachmayer rubber grips are even worse. One cylinder was all I could stand.

Bob,
The 29, 57, 58, 25's, 38-44, 24, and 27 are all the same frame size. The 29, 25, and 57/58 have longer cylinders. The factory did heat treat the frames/cylinders for the "new" 44 magnum differently when it was first introduced, and they added the bull barrel and full length cylinder in an attemp to keep recoil managable, but they are all the same size gun with equal barrel lengths.
Perhaps what you see as being smaller, or "more appealing" about the 41's are the fact that the 58 has small fixed sights, and magna stocks as issued from the factory, which tends to give them a smaller appearence. If you lay them side by side though, you'll see they are the same size after all.

Oh, yeah The first centerfire handgun I used extensively belonged to a buddy in college: an M58 with the Magna grips. The old Remington 210 grain JSP load would definitely get your attention.

Just to demonstrate how old I am getting (apparently, no where near as old as Iggy!), I paid full retail for my then-NIB Model 58. $183.75, which included an about 6.5% sales tax.
I may be able to get my money back.
