Default Presentation Cases Model 27

I see 27's in presentation cases and blue boxes. Did one come before the other? Or was the presentation case special ordered with the gun?
My 1980, 3.5" came with target grips and tools in the presentation case. And the grip cut out in the case is for target grips. Maybe only the magna gripped 27's came in the blue box. I'd like to know.

In September 1975, S&W upgraded the Model 27 by equipping it with a target hammer and trigger, checkered, target stocks made of Goncalo alves, and shipping it with a mahogany presentation case. Prior to this time, the Model 27 was equipped with a standard hammer and trigger, Magna stocks made of walnut, and shipped in a blue, cardboard box.

Default Mod 27s in cases

As Bill mentioned, starting in 1975 this is the type of liners used for the model 27s.

This is my 6 1/2" 27 but the case has clam shell type liners because the gun is earlier than the rest!

You will note in a couple of the pictures there is a cardboard shipping carton with the end label on the outside end of the carton. This is the way these guns were shipped which was the cause of many of this type of liners cracking.

And I still think the target options are a mistake on the short 27.

It's all a matter of personal taste. To me the 3.5" guns look *** heavy with the big stocks and the TT/TH also don't fit the theme.

Did it ship with both the blue box and the presentation case? I have a 4 inch that came with both and the label is on the outside of the box that they both came in.

Does he deliberately not match the original color or is he unable to do so?

I assume the question is for me... truthfully.. I never asked as it makes no matter to me..( what you see could very well be my photography skills ( NONE)

As I am concerned, Joe does as fine job as possible..I would not expect him to match exactly the color of 30 years ago.. I'm sure one could get close..and it appears from most discussions here on the forum.. whether Joe does them or someone else.. most folks are pleased with the results.. and the exact match is of relatively small concern.

Your exacting standards and expectations are to be admired.. they allow us to always ask "can it be better?"

Thank you and

Regards
Sal

The cases that Joe has done for me are time period proper and almost an exact match in both color and texture. During certain periods more than one blue hue was used by S&W.

All the photos I have seen of the refurbished cases appear to be a different shade than original. I have not seen any in person but like I said, all the photos look similar. It's not a big deal and I was just wondering why the slight variation in hue.

SP-

I can't speak for Joe as to why the slight variance in color, but can say his work is first rate, and the interior will last far longer than the original.

That said, I have a few cases that have the original interiors in them, and they vary in color more from the factory than what Joe's do from the original standard blue. I believe that is also one reason why no one realy seems to be bothered if his are slightly lighter in color than some factory liners.

Default Color?

Saxonpig - Please look close at my post with all the mod 27s. These are all original cases, not restored! All the pictures were taken the same day and in the same light(sun light) within minutes of each other. You will notice a big difference in the "blue flocking" from the factory of the 8 3/8" and the 6" cases and a more suttle difference between the rest. I ask you sir, which is the "standard" S&W blue? The next problem I have is the flocking of today. It comes in only ONE Royal blue which is a much brighter blue and the flocking texture does not match the original. Might I suggest you send your cases back to the factory, they might have some of the original flocking stashed away and would be able to repair the cracks and holes in your liners and reflock them. Please do not send them to me, it is obvious my abilities are not at a level high enough to satisfy your discriminating taste!

jepp2 - The type of case you described sounds like the type of case used from 1979-1983. In this case the guns points right and the blue box you mentioned should have NO outside markings(just a plain blue box). The cases I posted above were used from 1976-1978. Yes, the "3 ts" practice was used in these cases also.

A "thank you" to those that posted in my behalf with pictures of their cases!

When I was reflocking my own cases, I talked with the folks at Don-Jer (Jill) awhile back about the color of the flocking available... at the time they were willing to make up a minimum 5lb batch if I would send in a color sample to match up with.

For various reasons, I never got around to doing it, plus I was reluctant to risk sending out and losing in transit, any of these hard to come by intact presentation case liners/trays that I have for my cases.

I have had a few cases...

And I always think of the dark blue interior coloring. I am sure the lighter shades may be due to fading with age but the restored cases appear to be a little lighter in color.

I hope you don't mean me as I certainly don't intend to "hang" anybody. I only noted that the restored cases appear to be in a slightly lighter shade and asked why. Not a criticism, just a question.
