Opening up Shotgun chokes?
I have an opportunity to acquire a reasonably nice little 28 ga. O/U, American Arms (Italian import) vintage mid 80's. I like the way it fits me. But, it is choked F and IM. I would only be using it for skeet and possibly an occasional dove hunt. The gun is priced O.K., but I can't seem to find anyone willing to open up the chokes, "at a reasonable price". I wouldn't mind putting about $100 in the gun, but more than that and it puts the total well beyond what it is worth. Can anyone recommend a source, or method to open up to at least IC for a reasonable amount?

I know that briley will backbore your barrels and equip them with removable thin wall chokes. Likely more than $100 though. If you shoot skeet and have a quality 12 gauge, you can get subgauge tubes to shoot your 20, 28, 410 shoots.
Anywho, the best place to ask would be shotgunworld.com or trapshooters.com

I can't verify this, but Carlsons will thread a barrel and include a (3) choke set for less than $150 according to someone on the trapshooters board. Worth calling them up.

+1 on Mike Orlen.
It's been a while since I had Mike do any work for me but when I did I was sending him several a month for choke, forcing cone work,,even some dent removal.
Turn around was extremely fast and his prices very fair.
I think you're looking to just open the existing chokes a bit, not have screw-in tubes installed. (Though he does choke tube work as well).
Chrome plated bores were no problem on a couple I sent him for work. A small addition charge for the work but again it was more than fair.
I doubt to open the chokes would eat up more than $100 unless prices have jumped alot in the last couple of years!
Email him and see.
If I can find his price sheet he included with his work I'll post it here.

I use Keith Kearcher in Oregon for choke work. Competent, fast and inexpensive. Many good double smiths have several months to a year wait, but Keith is all business and doesn't dawdle.
