Unhappy Here is Remingtons response to my inquiry as to what they would do with my 700.

Mods. Please leave this as a new post and not add it to the CNBC post. It is not about the TV show but how they responded.
I have a older model 700, 30-06. I am not concerned with the trigger issue but with the fact that the safety must be in the fire (unsafe) position to unload the gun, that's all. Seems kinda backwards to me. It must be to Remington also, as they have a safety modification program or SMP.

I wrote to Remington before the show aired and had not seen it. I asked them how they would correct the safety. Here is their first "canned reply"

"Thank you for contacting us about the recent airing of the CNBC program, "Remington Under Fire". Rest assured that Remington is, and will remain, one of the strongest and most iconic brands in America. Our company has always been, and will remain, focused on providing the highest quality, safest and most reliable products to our loyal customer base comprised of hunters, shooters, law enforcement and military personnel in America and around the world. No media story riddled with unsubstantiated allegations will diminish the pride we take in our company and its products.

Visit www.Remington700.tv today to view our initial response to CNBC's story. New video's and responses will be added daily. Please encourage others to visit the site to learn more about the true facts and manufacturing of the model 700.

If you would like to have your gun sent in for an inspection or safety modification we can direct you to your closest Remington Authorized Repair Center to have the work completed if you have a bolt lock gun."

As this did not answer my question, I wrote back saying so. Here is their second reply.

"Your rifle was made in 19xx, as such it would qualify for the SMP. Model 700 or 40-X rifles made after March 1982 do not have a bolt-lock mechanism and may be loaded and unloaded with the safety in the “S” or “On Safe” position. Consequently, post-1982 Model 700 or 40-X rifles are not subject to this bolt-lock Safety Modification Program. To determine whether your Model 700 or 40-X rifle has a bolt-lock mechanism, either:

• Call Remington toll-free at 1-800-243-9700 and a service representative will help you determine if your firearm has a bolt-lock mechanism, or
• Take your Model 700 or 40-X rifle to a Remington Authorized Repair Center and a qualified gunsmith will examine your firearm and determine whether it has a bolt-lock mechanism.
• If your Model 700 or 40-X rifle has a bolt-lock mechanism, it is eligible for this bolt-lock Safety Modification Program. If you participate, your firearm will be cleaned and inspected for proper functioning by a qualified gunsmith. Once the condition of your firearm has been assessed, you will be notified of one of the following:
• Your firearm’s trigger assembly is otherwise in good operating condition, and the gunsmith will proceed to physically remove the bolt-lock feature so that your rifle can be loaded and unloaded while the safety remains in the “S” or “On Safe” position; or
• Your rifle’s trigger assembly is found to be in an unsatisfactory or potentially unsafe operating condition because of any number of factors, including wear, alteration or maintenance. The entire trigger assembly will be replaced with a new factory trigger assembly, which does not incorporate a bolt- lock mechanism.

In either case, the total cost to you is $20 plus shipping and handling. You will also receive a safety redemption certificate to complete and submit in order to receive a free blaze orange hat (one hat per certificate).
How to participate in the Safety Modification Program
Complete the General Repair Form and Send or deliver your firearm and the completed repair form to either:
a) A Remington Authorized Repair Center; or
b) Ship your firearm to the Remington factory at:
Remington Arms Company, Inc.
Ilion Firearms Plant
Attention: BL Safety Program
14 Hoefler Avenue
Ilion, NY 13357
Remington will bill or arrange for payment once your firearm is received and evaluated."

What I find ridiculous is the statement :

the total cost to you is $20 plus shipping and handling. You will also receive a safety redemption certificate to complete and submit in order to receive a free blaze orange hat (one hat per certificate).

Well folks that is not the total cost!. Shipping and handling both ways adds at least $40 plus whatever insurance costs.

I guess its cheaper to buy Elmer Fudd's orange hat than fix the safety. I do not want to fill out another form and mail it to get a hat.

Heck, Ruger gave out hats and a extra magazine for the LCP fix.

So according to Remington, there is no problem but they have a "modification program" to fix something that is not a problem and the customer gets to pay for it??.

Will a Timney trigger fix the problem? If so, it is a better trigger, and less money to the rifle owner.

Timney, Jewel, etc., all make aftermarket triggers that fit these rifles and are better than the factory originals.

Here's two for the 700:

Rem 700 w/safety

Rem 700

Once again. Why should a customer pay $150 to fix a problem that apparently "does not exist"????? As far as shooting the 700 trigger is wonderful.

For that kind of money, I'd sell the gun and buy another brand.
