Who Would You Stand in Line To Meet?
I saw on TV this AM that the line to meet Pres. Bush at a book signing this morning began forming last night and already has hundreds of people waiting in the cold for "W." to arrive and sign copies of his new book. And they have to go through a Secret Service checkpoint to meet the ex-President.
I've been in that Border's store many times, but not to stand in line. I have met a couple of authors there, but never needed to go through security for it.
Did once stand in a very long line to meet Heidi Klum, but gave up after I got inside the store and found that the line wound through every aisle in the shop, and people behind me were lined up all down the hall of the mall. Someone said that people were actually outside, too.
I got within maybe 25 feet of her, but the line wound around so much that I gave up and left, after watching her interact for a while with the crowd. That lady has a finely-oiled mind as well as her other obvious assets. Sings well, too.
But I won't wait too long to meet anyone that I can think of. I tend to get hungry or need the restroom.
Who would you stand in a long line to meet and get their autograph? Anyone?
Oh: I'll buy Bush's book. I just won't stand in a long line to do it.

I'd consider it as much an honor to meet President Bush as any politician I can think of.
But more to the point of your question, the recent "great captains" have always interested me. When I was younger, I would have been very interested in picking the brains of Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton, MacAurthur, Rommel, Guderian, von Manstein, Alexander, Montgomery, etc., etc., (yes, the big boys out on the water, too) but with the passing of more than a few years, I have developed the opinion that it might be better to just read their stories than to talk with them. If you weren't there, it would be a pretty one-sided discussion, and a lot of what was said you probably could not fully grasp.

Extra books with the signature on them generally end up on the shelf with a sticker that says "autographed copy" or else can simply be purchased on Ebay.
I doubt anyone famous is going to do more than glad hand or make small talk with the onlookers. I've never been the fanboy type.
I suppose I'd wait with the boys to see one of the wrestlers that they enjoy watching. That'd be about it.

Mr. Thomas *******, just to shake his hand and tell him he's made the world a better, and cleaner place.
Also apologize for taking his name in vain too.

I've stood in line at Disney World for an hour and a half to get on a 10 minute ride so I guess I'd stand that long to meet President Bush.

I stood in line for a few minutes once to get James Michener's autograph at a book signing. I was there to buy "Chesapeak" anyway, so why not? Didn't cost anything but a few minutes.

Agree with galena, I would not stand in line to meet anyone and any politician would be particularly low on my list.

Personally, I would stand in line for hours to meet Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barak Obama, and several others. I would love to have the opportunity to refuse to soil my hand by shaking theirs!

My dad done that with john kennedy when he was running for president. My dad was a factory worker and kennedy was campainging at the gate shakeing hands with everyone. Dad ignored his hand and told him he was just a ritch playboy! I remember him comeing home from work telling about it. At the time it surprised me as usualy he never put anybody down. He was very conservative and read a lot and kept up with politics.

Who that you might reasonably have a chance to meet would you want to greet after an hour or more in line? Especially if the weather is especially humid or cold? I really felt for those people in line at Border's in Preston Royal this morning. I was out last night, and it was danged chilly!
I thought of driving over, but saw the long lines on TV and figured that the Secret Service would probe me for my pocketknife, my ballpoint pen, etc., and just decided to skip the experience.

Considering you have ruled out Christ, I assume God is out also. If he or she must be breathing I would have to say no one. I have hign opinions of many people but don't feel the need to stand in line for hours to meet them for 10 seconds or less.

Given the limits you have imposed, and my belief that I will not have to stand in line to meet Him in person, I must say that my experiences in the service left me with a few, but only a few quirks.
One is that I will not stand in line for any reason if there is any possibility that I can avoid it.
I cannot think of anyone I would stand in line to meet.
Bob
EDITED to add:
I think W is the closest to the living, breathing man I might like to talk with, as I did not always agree with him, but believed he always tried to do the "right" thing for our country.

I hate waiting in lilnes and can not think of one single person famous or infamous that I would wait in line to meet. With that being said I don't mind waiting (and will gladly do it again and again) in line to pick up my daughter at school or after dance practice.

this throat tearing things been done to death ....
I'd do it to feed him dog pee intravenously prior to mailing his spine to his mother .... but thats for another thread pertaining to the fine art of the well crafted threat

Standing in Line
For those who have never HAD to stand in line for your food, mail, clothes, whatever, don't understand the mentality of those of us who were compelled to do such sordid things against our will. Once I left the good ole USMC on my own two feet, I swore then and there I would NEVER stand in line to eat again or for too much of anything else, and I haven't! PO'd some folks along the way, but, they got over it, I guess, or don't care!
Not too many living, breathing souls I'd stand in much of a line to meet.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I'm with those who say nobody. (Feralmerril's choice excepted.)
I take a perverse pride in ignoring celebrities. Often it is news to me when someone tells me somebody is a celebrity.

At Chiller Theatre here in NJ in April, 2008 I waited in line about an hour to get an autograph from WWII veteran Ernest Borgnine-also shook hands with him. In April 2009 I waited about 45 minutes to get an autograph from WWII veteran Tony Curtis, who recently left us. Also waited about 30 minutes to get an autograph from WWII veteran Mickey Rooney.
Regarding people waiting in line to meet W, anyone who shows up unannounced at an airport to greet returning troops is worth waiting in line
for.

Gun Runner,
My thoughts, exactly!
My dad had this under the glass on his desk. I now have it under the same glass on the same desk. I wish it was still dad's desk (it was his fathers).
When I Was……
4 Years: My daddy can do anything
7 Years: My daddy knows a lot, a whole lot.
8 Years: My father doesn’t quite know everything.
12 Years: Oh well, naturally my father doesn’t know everything.
14 Years: Father? Hopelessly old fashioned.
21 Years: Oh! That man is out of date, what did you expect?
25 Years: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.
30 Years: Must find out what dad thinks about it.
35 Years: A little patience, let’s get dad’s opinion first.
50 Years: What would dad have thought about it?
60 Years: My dad knew literally everything.
65 Years: I wish I could talk it over with dad once more.

I'm low on pride these days. I'd stand in line (a short one) to meet Cajun Lawyer. I've met Charlie a few times, and expect to again. One of these gun shows I expect to meet Leyand Ray and maybe Leezana Joe. But those folks stood in line to meet all of us.
I'm not standing in line to meet Lee, he's never at his table anyway. If you want to meet or see him, you've got to stagger aimlessly (like him) around the gun show.
And I'd probably stand in line to meet Feralmerril. I think him and me would have a lot in common.
I prefer to meet with and talk to real people. I consider all politicians to be fakes and frauds. I'd probably like to meet Sarah Palin, but I think I also like viewing her from a safe distance.
Yes, I've stood in line to meet with the bartender a time or two, and expect to again. But with them, its not to meet them but rather get what they've got for me.

My youngest son and I waited in line for 4 hours to be close to the stage when W was doing his Social security tour a few years ago. Just watching the secret service work was worth it.
That son is now a police officer and a National Guard soldier heading for Iraq next week.
I will be waiting in line a year from now when his flight is landing.

I did wait in line a couple of times, but neither time was for a politician. I got to meet Chuck Yeager and I stood in a short line to meet Brian Shul. While everybody should know who Chuck Yeager is, Brian Shul was one of the last pilots for the SR-71 Blackbird when it was still operational. He wrote a great book with excellent pictures of the blackbird called Sled Driver. The only other living person I would probably stand in line to meet is Ben Rich, the man who took over Kelly Johnson's post as the leader of Skunk Works. If you haven't guessed my other interest, besides guns, is aviation.

There are quite a few people that I'd love the opportunity to sit down and share a beer (or cup of coffee) with, but stand in line just to shake hands and exchange a few words with someone?
No thanks; I'll pass.

"...Stevie Nicks"
I once worked security at a private show she was giving in Dallas back in the mid-1980s and she fell down some stairs into me. It was 2:00 in the morning and neither of us was much impressed with the other.
I got to have Grace Jones' spit rain down on me during her performance at that same event. Now that was really unimpressive.
I'll be waiting in line to see our son who returns from his U.S.M.C assignment with the 31st MEU after the first of the year.
