Someone told me a 586 no dash was on a factory recall list at one time????
I have a 586 no dash on a layaway at my FFL, mfg date of 1982. Someone told me they thought there was once a recall on this model along with some other models due to a binding problem. Anyone ever heard of something about this? It is a 586 4" and ser# is ABD82XX. Just wondering if this is one that would have been affected.
Thanks,

Open the cylinder and see if there is an "M" stamped by the serial number.
If there is it has already been sent back. If not Smith will do the upgrade for you at no charge.

The recall was for the hammer nose bushing, which allowed primers of "Hot" loads to flow back into the bushing hole and tie the gun up. Many of the no dash guns did not need the modification. Shoot a few full house 125 gr bullets and see it the primer has a ridge around the edge which will drag on the recoil shield.

I just sent my old 686 back for this mod, It would lock up bad with 357 loads. I had to pay shipping there but had it back in a week and a half, the letter from the factory that said they received it showed up the same day as the gun, got to love fed ex! the basteges did put in a new rebound spring, which will get cut down ASAP!

Buy a box of Federal or Remington 125 grain 357 magnum ammo. If you don't encounter binding in fifty or one hundred rounds of this ammo your gun is probably one of the lucky ones not requiring bushing replacement. Our department had early 686s that would shoot 38 special and heavier than 125 grain 357s all day long. When loaded with our 125 grain Remington or Federal duty load of the guns would usually bind within a cylinder or two of the hot ammo. The cylinder will not rotate or open without the assistance of a rubber mallet or wood hammer handle, etc.
I have a 586 no dash that shoots the 125 grain ammo just fine and it does not have the M marking. This was a problem with the earliest L frames and was quickly remedied by the factory so hopefully it will be a non issue for you.

what about the 586-1? is that a problem model too? I just haven't shot mine much but now with magna grips and a tyler I plan on using it as my main 357. I've heard of this problem but never worried about it much since in the past I never shot the gun other than my initial test after purchase.

The -1's were also subject to the recall. The -2's came with the modification from the factory.

mine was a -1, would shoot 38 all day long, but one round of 357 would lock it up tight as a drum. work great now!

You should be well armed with a 586. L frames seem to be strong and well balanced. I have been into N frames for longer than the L frame has been produced, but the L frames are very workman like guns and perform very well.

I had a 586 no dash, purchased new in the mid eighties. There was a recall on mine which changed the firing pin on the hammer to a floating firing pin
