Default Hornady's Self Defense Ammunition

This seems like an appropriate forum for this question...

Has anyone tried the new Hornady Self Defense ammunition and what do you think of it.. I have ordered some of the ./38 Spec. +P, .357 Mag. and .45 Acp Self Defense stuff from Hornady to test, but wondered what everyone thought of this concept.. This ammo should take care of the New Jersey "No Hollowpoint ammo for Self Defense" statue..

Comments....

Dave

Have some HDY CD 380 and 38 spec. have shot both.the 380 is a little different for a semi- auto in that the bullet has a cannelure to prevent setback on the feed ramp. the nickle case supposedly makes for smoother feeding. functioning is perfect thru (3) kel-tecs, (2) rugers, (1) KAHR, and an old Colt mod 1908. Satisfied enough with it to tote my carrys with one chambered, and a full mag.
I guess the advertising worked also. john

Hornady CD is the only hollowpoint ammo that will feed properly in my Kimber ultra CDP.
Here's a few rounds out of that Kimber...just for test purposes, fired into and recovered from a phone book back-stop @ 7 yards.

I use the Hornady Tap™ hollow points chambered in .45ACP. They shoot great in every way and give the best groupings (as apposed to using cheap target ammo)

It's a great product and what I use in my EDC. I've no doubts about the incredible stopping power these have.

10/20/30/50ft .... noooo problem..

I've long been a fan of Hornady's XTP line of bullets. Not all agree, but I personally don't mind sacrificing a little expansion for extra penetration. The only reason I don't carry Hornady's TAP line of ammunition is that I can find other quality (and arguably better) JHP ammunition much cheaper.

However, I will say, I'm not a fan of their Critical Defense line. I don't trust bullets that are light for their caliber and designed to always expand to have enough penetration to reach the vitals under less than ideal circumstances.

I too love Hornady's products in general, but after their having several lots in a row of Critical Defense ammo failing to expand (acting closer to FMJ) I'll stick with Barnes' superior Tactical XP copper load from other manufactures or use heavy for caliber unbonded loads.

I believe that Cor-bon Powerball as well as the Hornady Critical Defense circumvent the hollowpoint rule...The arrogance of Jersey's laws really burns my ***. Especially because I'm a cop and their attorney general made it very clear that he would prosecute any off duty officer from another state who took enforcement action. ie...you see a violent robbery which legally you can stop in any state..but this jerk wants you to allow it to happen and just be a good witness. Now I don't know too many CIVILIANS or COPS who could not act in that situation. Sorry this got a bit off topic however that states B.S. infuriates me!

I have Hornady Critical Defense in all my carry guns. 380, 9MM, and my wifes 357. I think it is the best thing going right now.

I just read in my FOP newsletter about S.1132 (which enhances HR218) that has been signed into law. NJ Ag's office can pound sand on there ammo ban if you are carrying under the protection of the Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act. I added a link to the FAQ.

I have a copy of the updated version and plan on carrying the ammo in jersey I qualify with...It's a shame that they are so rediculous. Some depts in PA and other states have policies that restrict officers from carrying there.

I won't use it. I had some corrode severely from spending a couple months in a synthetic speedloader pouch.

Corrosion

Hornady blew me off. Said it had to be tanning salts from leather; the shells never contacted leather. They were stored in the proximity of leather, but not touching.

Default 38 S-W ammo (not specials but shorter)

I am looking to purchase bullets for a small S-W pistol. It takes 38 but not 38 special. The bullets need to be shorter for this smaller pistol.

The .380 CD ran flawlessly through my NAA Guardian. I've yet to try it in other calibers, but am anxious to see how it runs through my Colt Defender(.45) and my CS9

The question should really be, "Has anybody used Hornady Self Defense Ammo in a real life self defense shooting?" And of course, the coroner's report would be required!!

I use Hornady critical defense in all my home defense handguns. I have a 1911 Kimber and a 39-2 S&W 9mm and they feed without a problem. I have shot the ammo and it has been accurate. I have also fired Winchester PDX in 45 acp with no problem. I am told that Speer Gold dot JHPs are one of the best also.

I am curious. In what medium or situation did the Critical defense ammo fail to expand??
