Default Smith &wesson N1 Second issue

Hello,
I have a Smith &wesson N1 Second issue.
This revolver has an anchor engraved on the frame.
I did not know that Marine had used this type of small revolver!!!!
Who could give me a information onto this anchor?
Thanks.

Bisley, That anchor mark is a die stamp, not an engraving, however it is unusual. I have never seen that exact mark on a Model One, 2nd issue (or any other S&W) before. The number 4 and the other small stamp, I can't make out, are assemblers, fitters & workers marks used to identify the number of revolvers made and asssembled, as these workers were paid by piece work based on the number of guns produced each week. Post the serial number of this gun on the Forum, as it's possible that a close numbered gun may be in a members collection and also bears an anchor stamp, which would indicate perhaps that the stamp has some relation to a certain Floor Foreman's assembly team of workers. Another possibility would be that the anchor stamp was added after the gun left the factory, for unknown purposes. If it was to identify the gun as having a connection with a Marine ownership or use, the stamp would not have been hidden under the grip, but would have been on a visible exterior part. Another S&W mystery! Ed.

That anchor looks like the one in my book of Gunmarks identified as a French Naval Acceptance Mark.
If it is, I have no idea why it would be under the grip, but being an acceptance mark instead of a property mark might be a clue.

Dean, the French naval acceptance anchor stamp is larger ( I have it on a couple of French Naval Cutlasses) and the cross arm is only about 1/2 the width of the hooks. Not that there couldn't have been more than one die stamp used by the French, but in my experience, government ownership marks or acceptance stamps are always placed on an item in a visible location, not in a hidden one. Ed,
I was grasping at straws.
How much bigger? There's not much space to put a large mark on a No.1.

Bisley, try Poppert's Gun Parts for a replacement spring. Poppert's Gun Parts Main Menu

Dean, I'd say about 50% bigger, on the cutlasses. Ed.
