Default Pre-WWII M&P 5 Screw age

I'm new to this, so be patient. i am a gunsmith in Texas. Occasionally, a customer asks for info on his firearm. I have an M&P 38 Special, serial number 4517xx, stamped on butt, bottom of barrel, and on rear of cylinder. Stamped on the frame, under the crane is 91039. Barrel is 5" long from cylinder to muzzle. The ejector rod has, what I have heard called, a mushroom head. There are two cuts in the bottom of the barrel to accomodate the shape. Grips appear to be replaced with later target style, but the overall condition is very good to excellent. Action is tight and nickel plating has only a few blemishes. Can you tell me when it was made? From the serial number, I think it is a model of 1905 4th change.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum. You do have a Model 1905, 4th Change, From the serial number I would guess it was shipped around summer of 1923. It probably should have checkered walnut grips without medallions. Are the trigger and hammer nickle or case hardened?

Default Pics of M&P 1905 Change 4

Here are a couple of pictures. As you can see, the grips don't go with the gun. I don't even think they are S&W made.
m-1911, the trigger and hammer are case hardened.
bmcgilvray, I am west of Luling.
