I just stepped out the back door to, uhhhhhhh, gaze at the stars for a few minutes. As the old folks used to say, it's been right airish down here in the Southern climes the last few days. It is right at 32* right now. I saw a big flock, two big Vs and a smaller one, of sandhill cranes headed South today. I hope the cold weather drives some doves down here. We have those split seasons, and my fields usually fill up with fat, northern birds about a week or ten days after the season ends. Our last season opened Thanksgiving and runs through Jan 8. I think maybe that is about a week later than usual.
I think we are looking at a low around 20* tonight with the high only about 40* tomorrow. We usually have a couple of spells like this, but they are usually much later in December, or more likely, mid-January through mid February.
Anyhow, I know some of you Michiganders or up-state New Yarkers will pooh-pooh at our temperatures. Just keep in mind, I don't own but two long sleeved shirts, a light jacket or two, and a very heavy Carhart jacket for feeding livestock in the sleet.
About 35 years ago there was a radio personality on a Columbus, GA radio station called "Cuzzin Al." His show ran from 4am to 6am. I listened to the show as I hauled produce to grocery stores in Columbus. He cracked me up one morning when it was in the low 20s. "Cuz," he said, "it was so cold this morning when I walked out on the porch that my credentials drawed up."
