Default Model 29-2 DOM, please.

Hi all,

I'm another enthusiast who recently purchased a S&W 29-2 8-3/8". I've read there are more robust make/models of 44mag available, but this one is gorgeous. Had to have it. I'll post pics and details soon.

In the mean time, I'm hoping someone can help me narrow the DOM: N397XXX. My Google effort suggests 1977ish.

Any tips or considerations I should be aware of going into this new relationship? I'll likely range fire a mix of 44 specials and mags a few times each month, and pig hunt 44 mags a couple times each year. I'd consider my intention to be light use.

It'd be great to hear what other S&W 29-2 owners have learned over the years.

Smile Welcome to the forum!

Your 29-2 was serialized in '76. To know for sure when it shipped from the factory would require getting it lettered. That will run you $50.

The 29's are great guns and obviousy we all love them here. They aren't as strong as a Redhawk or F/A, but they will last very well if a little care and common sense are used when using one.

It sounds like you are planning to use it wisely, and I'm sure you will have years of great service from it.

This one is one of mine. An S prefix 29-2 shipped July '69.-

Thanks for the info, Gun 4 Fun, and the photo. Seems like every one of these I see is "the best!". Now yours is. I wish my grips looked as nice as those.

I was perusing a local shop trolling for a used Redhawk. I saw this one and a cloud closed in on me. When I awoke, I owned it. Funny how that happens. $750 + tax, which is about 200 more than I wanted to spend but I feel good about it.

How would my refinishing the grips effect it's value? Other than grips, the gun is in great condition. Slight marking on the cylinder, nothing else I've noticed. Hopefully, I attached the picture correctly.

Taking it to the range just as soon as I post this reply.

That's a nice looking gun, and in that pic the grips don't look like they need any attention. We have a forum member here that we all use for grip refinishing named VM. He does outstanding work for very reasonable prices, has fast turn around, and you will be happy with his work if you choose to use him.

We also have a forum member here named jcelect that restores the interior of these case to better than new condition. Most of us use him too. Again, very reasonable and you won't be disappointed.

The pic makes my gun look better than it is I think. It is nice though, especially for its age. There are lots of members here with much, much, finer examples than any I own, but thanks for the compliment.

Merry Christmas!
