4006
In my other posting I am looking at 40 S&W pistols, can anyone who has one tell me about the 4006? Are they reliable, accurate decent to shoot?

IMO there are only two semi-autos ever made in 40S&W worth owning, one is the 4006 series (4006, 4046, etc.). All stainless, heavy enough to tame the recoil, strong enough to be durable and after that it's all S&W 3rd Gen goodness. Which in case you don't know means accurate, reliable and comfortable in the hand or on the hip.

My question is did they ever make a 5 inch barreled model other than the Performance Center model? I read somewhere that S&W made a run of complete 5 inch uppers that could be retro fit but I've never seen one. I also heard there was someone one this forum that was selling them but again, I've never seen them. I would love to own a 5 inch 4006. Can anyone elaborate?

Very happy with my CHP trade in 4006. Got it with new Hogue grips and after buffing out the holster shine, it looks brand new. Nice shooter, but as heavy as my 1911A1.

I believe the 5" models were all Performance Center models (@ $1K +/-), there are a couple guys here who own them and can hopefully give you further detail.

It seems to be hard to come by any information on a 5 inch 4006. Ive seen a 5 inch 4006 for sale on GB that wasn't a performance center tactical 40. I guess I go back to hunting the web...........

I'd like to get my hands on one of the CA State Parks issue weapons. I see them from time to time, but many have heavy wear on the gun and the asking price is to high for a gun in that kind of condition.

I was forced to start carrying a 4006 after 8 years on-duty carrying a Colt M 1911. I hated it at first, but grew to accept it after mastering the DA then SA trigger pull. I later learned to really like it and purchased one for my self. Retired now it is beside the bed wearing Trijicon sights. My BUG, S&W Model 3913 is now my carry gun as a House Bill 218, LESA ccw gun. IMHO, the Model 4006 is one of the best large bore handguns out there. ......... Big Cholla

I purchased a used 4006 for 4 bills probably 8-9 years ago and shot it very little. I just liked the feel and balance in my hand and being left handed the ambi decocker was what I was looking for. I had a break in and burglary at my barn in rural OK and started carrying it in a nylon holster pretty much every time I was on the acreage. After taking a CCW class I started shooting it on a fairly regular basis. I haven't really noticed recoil and have reached the point that it feels un-natural to not have it on my hip when I'm out and about. As for CCW, my answer to the composite type 40s was a 4013TSW.

The forty-aught-six.
A charming piece of heavy metal.
If my understanding is correct, the 4006 was the first Smith and Wesson in .40 S&W caliber - but not the first gun in that caliber. My understanding is that the distinction for first .40 S&W goes to the Glock 22.
Glock beat S&W at their own game by one week.
I still want one.
Get one while you can.

Yep, Gaston Glock caught wind of the .40 S&W cartridge at the SHOT show, and the G22 was out in the market in record time.
My first .40 S&W pistol was a 2nd gen Glock 22, it was ok, but I wanted something that soaked up the snappy recoil and the 4006 sure fit the bill. I liked the 4006 so much it fueled a passion for the S&W 3rd gen pistols... I have a 4506 and 4516.
My 4006 has accuracy that is better than the "service grade" accuracy of my Glock 22, it can shoot a lot better than what my eyes are capable doing.
The 4006 is responsible for reversing S&W's fleeting LE sales to Glock, after the CHP adopted it, the 4006 was off to the races. It's a damed shame that S&W has seen fit to cease producing the all metal (3rd gen) DA pistols.

I just a slightly used 4006TSW. It is one well made piece of steel. Heavy as sin but it appears that it will take a licking and keep on ticking.

My 4006 served me well as a police duty weapon. It is a full size service pistol, 100% reliable and is combat accurate. I've never seen one used in competition, but that isn't what they are made for. If you want a tack driving race gun, keep on looking. If you want a reliable pistol to bet your life on, the 4006 is as good as they come.

I have a 3rd Gen. 4006. It is a really good gun, I even like the way it looks. Tough and should stand up to any factory ammo. I think it was designed to handle the 40cal. from the start.

I was heavy into pistol shooting back in the late 80's & early 90's. Purchased a 4006 early on, # TFF73xx. I sold it to my dad after a few years. He hardly shot it if at all and when he passed away in 2010 I was able to get it back. I've sold, as everyone pretty much has, guns I wish I never had @ Model 29 w/ 8 3/8" barrel, scoped; Colt Python and a German made Walther PPK. But thanks to my dad I still have the 4006 and love it. Think I'll go to the range today
For your viewing pleasure...

I have a couple of 4006TSWs that I managed to find NIB. Very reliable, easy to shoot, plenty accurate for me (about 2" groups at 10 yards shooting without a rest), and I keep one in the nightstand with a TLR-2 light/laser combo on the rail. My only complaint would be that they are a bit heavy for me to carry due to some back problems.

Grinder... on that Limited Single Action, was that mag well original to the pistol from the PC? Does has have tabs/legs that straddle the frame and it is attached with the same pin for the grip?
If so, that sure explains a mystery that I've always wondered about on a Lew Horton 4006 IDPA model from the Performance Center that I have.
Unlike a regular 4006, on the bottom of the frame where the pin is at, there is a space between the frame and the underside of the grip, so I'm guessing that the frame was made that way to accept a mag well adapter even though it is not original to the design/style of my pistol.

You are correct on all accounts Conrad

I've got one, my father bought it for CCW, and decided he wanted a .45 so I got it for a song from him 5 or 6 years ago. As reliable as my HK, and almost as much fun to shoot. It's unaltered and I view it as my go-to gun, should something hit the fan, I'm grabbing my 4006. Once the 5th mag is empty I can still use it as a bludgeon
