Default 6” round butt nickel .38 M&P

Stopped at a pawn & gun shop and picked up this 6” round butt nickel .38 M&P s/n 285379 with checkered walnut stocks which shipped in October 1917.

Since acquiring this one I’ve noticed several 6” round butt .38 M&Ps (mostly blue) that also shipped in the 4th quarter of 1917. Between April 1917 when the U.S. entered WWI and September 1917 when shipment began for the .45 Hand Ejector – Model 1917, I would have expected factory resources would have been devoted to military production. Was the military also buying .38 M&Ps in 1917 or were these for the civilian market?

Unfortunately the MSHP didn't start until 1931 . . . but I did check the property record cards just in case they bough it second hand

And a very Merry Christmas to you & Julie as well!

Nice one Russ. Question. Shouldn't the ejector rod be blue?

Paul,

Thanks . . . good question on the ejector rod. It looks totally original to me but I know next to nothing about early nickel M&Ps. There is another nickel M&P in the same 285XXX s/n range posted in this thread from JeeCeeNC . . . it has a nickel ejector rod as well.

Very Early M&P 1905 Fourth, Round Butt (pic heavy)

Perhaps one of the experts will check in and give us an answer.

Russ, my nickel RB M&P shows no indication of being refinished, I believe the nickeled ejector rod to be factory original.
My nickel M&P is #284704 and the blued is #285221. Seems most of the RB 6" guns I see on here are in that general serial number range.
