Mod 27-2
I have a Mod 27-2. Is there a place to look up the serial # to check on the date of manufacture?

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has the numbers. Someone here might have an idea, what is the number. You don't have to give out all the numbers, replace the last three digits with an X for each number if you wish.

I had gone dormany so long, I was disconnected from my log-in. Glad to see it worked the way I hoped it would.
Mine is a 5" barrel with VERY little wear on the finish.
I only carried it a couple times in a shoulder rig ans then went to a Mod. 36 IWB rig, so the Mod. 27 has sat in the safe for years.
I was thinking on selling it and getting into Cowboy action shooting, but some of the posters on here kinda talked me out of selling it, maybe. What might it be worth?

Looks to be made in 1966-1967. From what I have been reading here, the S prefix Smiths are more valuable than the N's, it seems.
Hope you get into the cowboy shooting- it is fun!

bmwsid,
The record dates from S&W are based upon the date that the piece was shipped from the factory and not the build or manufactured date.
Serial # S267198 shipped in May of 1966. I hope this helps.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition, the values for the gun in NIB condition is $750 and excellent is $500 but there is a slight premium on guns with a S prefix. 5-inch barrels tend to be a bit more desirable for some. What finish is it, blued or nickel?

Yeah I know, that's going by the book. I see them for alot more. I am waiting to see if a new addition of the S & W Catalog comes out with more real world prices.

Oh, sorry to have neglected to say it is blued. (To be honest, I didn't know there were nickle finish ones)

Yes, this does help. All the responces have been helpful.
It has a wonderful trigger, is that the way they all are?

The trigger and the action on the 27's and the earlier N frame .357's are the reason many (including myself) to believe that they are the best guns Smith ever turned out. I have had two Model 27-2's, a nickel 5 inch and a 3 1/2 inch blued and both have absolutely wonderful triggers. If you do sell it, you probably won't have any trouble getting the money for it.

That must be why I have seen some fairly high prices on the few I have seen for sale.
Thanks

OK, another place to show my ignorance. Pinned barrel? Where is it pinned? Is this as opposed to threaded?

Nice picture! Is the pin they speak of right there above the crane through the top strap?

Usually yes. It is not better for the sake of the difference between it compared to the new style but it represents an era that had more hand fitting and some believe more attention to detail. Some only own pre lock, some only pre mim, some only pre pin guns and other only pre 57. Each represents a change at smith and wesson and each era has their fans.

Thank you for your patience. Your 3.5" gun ever been fired? I don't even see a ring around the cylinder!

If it has it has not been more than a few cylinders full. It will be fired a little more once I can get to the range.

Here is another 27-2 with a 3 1/2 inch barrel. This one shoots as good as it looks.
