Default Scope/Dot Mount for 617

Just got a 617 and love it. But the old eyes need help of scope or dot. S&W makes what I assume is a great scope mount of steel but cost $100. Any recommendations as to a less expensive mount that fits and works well or is it best to "bite the bullet" so to speak and pay the $100. I need to go to a LGS and look through some scopes and dots. I assume the holigraphic dot is very fast on target and great for action shooting like plates? Something like a 2x scope I assumed used for distance more precise shooting? Don't know about the tubed dot. thanks

Try this link: Smith Wesson scope mount KLN frame

I used these mounts on my Model 29 and they work great.

Good luck with your new toy.

Default Try a Weaver!

I use these on my pin guns with no problems! They come in silver and blued! These fit the S&W guns that are drilled and tapped.
Weaver Top-Mount Scope Base #401S Silver - MidwayUSA
And they are cheap!

I have an Ultra Dot on my 617 and really like it. I forget where I got the mount from, but Midway rings a bell.

Default dot or scope

If you are looking for fast target accusition get a good red dot, if you want to target shoot for precision get a 2-6 pistol scope.pistol scopes have a long eye relief and require a little more time to get on target. You could do like I did and get both so then you can buy another gun so you can switch them back and forth perhaps a semi-auto 22 ??? ( buckmark ,rugerMKIII !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I recommend the weigand mount I had a weaver and did not use it there is no comparing between the to the weigand is far superior. You have a $700+ gun don't put. a $6.00 mount on it (just my opinion)

I have a Red Dot on another old non-Smith .22 revolver that I use for squirrel hunting...it does the job but I really like the precision I can get with a scope like what's mounted on my Model 29. I may just remove the Red Dot and buy another scope. If I had to do it all over again I would definitely go with a scope. Just my 1/50th of a dollar.

I have both "K" an "N" frame S&W's with Red Dots. They are a SUPERIOR set up for target shooting. Here is a 16-4 with Bushnell Red Dot:

Here is a 625-8 JM Special:

The 625-8 has a Weigand base. They are super strong and well built wihtout being "clunky". I can recommend them without reservation. On the late S&W frames, you just remove the rear sight and use the already drilled and tapped holes. Piece of cake!

For your 617, the Weaver 401 in either silver or black finish is more than enough mount. I use the Weigand scope mount on my magnums. As to the optical sight: I think you will be happiest with the standard "tube style" red dot. The Ultradot's have the best warranty.......lifetime. As a general rule, the 1" tubes have smaller dots. The 30mm tubes have a larger field of view. Most serious bullseye pistol competitors shoot an Ultradot...........either the Matchdot or the 1" 4 minute dot. That said, I have several of the older made in Japan Tasco PDP3's with a 5 minute dot. They have the widest field of view of any 30mm tube that I have shot. Plus, they have a nice round dot. Beware of some of these cheapo Chicom units. You will not be happy with a dot that looks like a starburst, a comma, or a figure eight. As to scopes of 2X or more: Unless you are shooting off a rest most of the time, you will find that while they magnify the target, they also add a new dimension to your "wobble" when shooting off-hand. Whatever you decide.......a .22 handgun with a dot sight makes for plenty of fun!
