Default Old Model 36 Issue

I picked up an older Model 36 3" awhile back. I've taken it to the range and it functions without a hitch. The only thing I've noticed, and I have lot of revolvers and a lot of experience with revolvers, is that when I open the cylinder fully, the lip of the cartridges touch the little ridge on the bottom of the frame and the cylinder won't turn freely. This happens both with spent cartridges and fresh ammunition. I've cleaned under the star and I as said, other than this one characteristic, the revolver functions well. No problems reloading, etc. I just wonder what causes this and should I get it fixed and what would that entail? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sir - Check the gas check on the front of the cylinder assy. Might be loose or has shifted fwd slightly - this will cause the cylinder to move to the rear. Result - no clearance. (the gas check is a bushing press fit into the front of the cylinder)

Badge130:

I believe you are referring to the FRAME LUG which keeps the cylinder from falling out when it is in the opened position. In a J-Frame revolver (older models) because the cylinder is so thin, sometimes the cartridges slightly hit the frame lug when you spin it in the open position. That is a normal condition in a J-Frame. If it is more than just a slight touching of the lug by the cartridges, then it was not fit correctly. This can be corrected by a competent Gunsmith or by sending it back to the Factory. If it is just a SLIGHT clicking sound when spun and it still spins freely, I would leave it alone.

The reason you don't have this problem on larger frame revolvers is that the cylinders are thicker and the cartridge rims do not get that close to the edge of the frame lug.

The newer J-Frames have a integral lug that is part of the frame, and since I do not own a newer model J-Frame, I do not know if they have similar idiosyncrasies.
