Tyler T-grip question
Other than the obvious, what is the difference between the 3 and 3r t grips. Does the 3r have a stamp designating it or is it just stamped 3. Any one with a side by sid picture of the two would be great. Thanks

The R designation lets you know it's for a round butt as opposed to a square butt.

I think what Beretta682 was asking, is if you had a 3 or 3R in your hand would there be any way of telling which one it is?

Correct. I've seen some pictures of a 3R for sale and it looks like it is only stamped with a 3. If anyone has a side by side of the two I would appreciate. I have one that is marked 3 but I don't know if it is a 3R.

The round butt versions are marked 3R. Differences I've noted between the two are the 3Rs are a tad shorter in length and they're not curved quite as much. That is to say, a 3 placed on a round butt K will cover the strain screw while the 3R doesn't and that same bottom edge of the adapter will tend to curve away from the front strap slightly whereas a 3R sits flat. It's difficult to see these differences looking at the adapters side by side but when placed on a gun, they become apparent.

I just pulled one off my wife's Model 10 and it has 3R on the back side on the bottom. BTW, it's a round butt style, but I've had it on this square butt frame for years. It's hard to tell the difference. There is a tell-tale imperfection (a tiny dimple on the right side). I've noticed it in other round butt K Frame Tylers, also.

I suspect the slightly smaller 3Rs will work on square butts but the reverse isn't true.
3R on a RB
3 on a SB
Notice the strain screw is visible on the round butt whereas the adapter covers it on the SB. The 3R also seems a bit thinner, fore to aft, than the square butt adapter.

Nice guns. There is also a not-so-perfect fit between the grip adapter and trigger guard when you put the round butt on the square, but it doesn't make that much of a difference and I'm not inclined to replace it.

Sweet. Thanks guys. Looks like it is a 3R as it doesn't completely cover the strain screw. And to think I just almost dropped 50.00 on one on ebay. I bought it used from a coworker who said it was for a j frame and Ive been running it on that for over a year. Still worked fine.

Thanks. There's also another thing that bears mentioning. I've seen old T-grips next to new ones for the same gun that look nothing alike as to shape, fitment, etc. Combine that with slight changes to S&W grip frames over the years/models and it's pretty much luck of the draw as to finding a T-grip that fits any particular gun perfectly. I've gone through a bunch myself trying to mate the best-fitting T-grips to my guns. I know others have done the same. It's pretty much a trial and error thing.

The 3R and 3 are each stamped with a 3R or 3
Here's a #1 I had laying on my desk. I put a little ink in the number because it wasn't showing up in the photo at all without it.
They're all stamped in the same place, the same size but some are easy to read, others... not so much. But they're definitely all stamped.

I'm not one to gloat but...
I wen't to a gunshow last weekend for the first time in a pretty long time and saw a little Tyler box on a table. I picked it up, read the number #20A-2 (old model S&W I frame). I opened the box saw it was actually stamped "1" (J frame) and asked the price.
The guy said $20, and I handed him the money so fast I forgot to ask if he'd take $15!

Gloat? Heck man, you got ripped off. I recently found an old style T-grip for my Colt Cobra at a gun show. The guy wanted a whole $5.00 for it. He didn't know what gun it fit. I happened to have the Colt on my hip at the time as that was the main reason I went to the show was to find a T-grip for it. Checked to see if it fit and whipped $5.00 out of my wallet in record time.
