Anyone who works or visits many of these countries needs to understand one thing. As the preacher said to the (black) sheriff in Blazing Saddles, "Son, you're on your own". And that can apply to Mexico, South America, Asia, etc. If you need a vacation stick with Western Europe, Britain, Canada, or stay in the US.

Well, the UK, Canada,and most of Europe also deny one the right to self defense. I think Switzerland may be the primary exception. If Swissman sees this, maybe he'll comment.
Some guy in Canada got charged a couple of weeks ago for shooting two punks trying to set his house on fire, I think. Someone posted about it here, but I didn't read the entire article.
Australia and New Zealand also aren't too friendly to the concept of being able to protect yourself, and I'd avoid most of our NE states, too. Probably Californa, also.
What we have in our better states may be unique in all the world, which is mostly a bad place. I hope that our government will improve, and it needs to. But the US is still a wonderful nation, in most areas.

Clearly, he hung around- wrong move.
He should have booked it back to the embassy, and a ride out of the country ASAP!
He should have known that in any other country where he isn't a citizen, and he uses deadly self-defense, the natives aren't going to like it too well. Doubly so for a country in which the majority of the population hates us as a people and nation.

Nogoodnamesleft - It's not a matter of being "afraid" to visit countries such as Mexico, I call it common sense. Many of these countries rely heavily on tourist dollars and any negative stories reported in the media hurt the economy. Hence most of them don't get reported. There are muggings, rapes, robberys, etc that you will never hear about because the media is controlled by the same factions that run the tourist industry that provide finances to the government. And many of these beautiful beaches you see advertised in the media are guarded by armed security who tell people don't leave their hotel after dark. Some vacation.

Having done more than my share of time in the third world, (18 months in Turkey and in and out of Mexico working/playing off and on for years), I am more than content to explore the good ole US of A on my vacation jaunts. Most folks speak English, credit cards and phones work just fine, I can usually carry legally and there are thousands of beautiful places we've yet to see.
My days of foreign travel are history, it's just too expensive and dangerous. How would you like to have plunked down thousands to visit Egypt right about now? Most folks become ill either during or immediately after a trip and flying is nothing but a buck sucking PITA so we'll just keep hooking up the travel trailer to the F-150 and heading down the interstate. YMMV (o;

During my 20 years in the Army, I got to visit or live in many of the World's hell holes. Nowadays, there is a lot of Texas I havn't visited yet, and it is a big beautiful state with lots of neat things to see.

Other than the beaches, you just described Las Vegas. None of the local media report, let alone discuss the suicides here unless it involves a resident and does not take place in a hotel/casino. My contacts in the trade tell me that the big places get one a week, minimum. As for muggings, assaults and rapes of tourists, that pretty much comes under the unofficial "do not report unless celebrity involved" statute.

Something to be said about home field advantage I always tell my son if he is going to "screw up" to please at least do it in Louisiana-and preferably in the 16th Judicial District.
