Default Model 66 question...

Stopped in the local shop today. On the shelf was a Model 66 no dash. Plenty of nicks and scratches, some crushed checkering on right grip panel. Shop owner claims it was a Chicago PD gun, and that "they were not allowed to shoot .357's, only .38's". Anyone know if that is true? The adjustable rear sight was black, not stainless (he had never heard of the stainless ones). To me, it appeared that the base of the black sight was slightly (VERY slightly) longer than the part of the frame it attached to (??). Could original SS sight been replaced? Little sign of flame cutting, forcing cone OK, lockup good. A proud old P&R warrior, but a little too used for what I'm looking for, besides, I want those SS sights! $475 on the tag...

Later model 66s (no dash) have the black rear sight, and they often overhang the top strap slightly. A bit pricy for the gun as described.

Someone on the Forum can probably answer the Chicago PD connection from direct experience.

Very early sights were unfinished stainless.
They soon changed to stainless with some sort of a flat black finish.
These are stamped with an "S" on the bottom of the leaf.

At some point, S&W apparently changed to blued carbon steel even on the stainless guns, although I haven't had any of the newer sights off to check.

As I recall, the Chicago police authorized only the .38 Special years ago, no Magnum loads allowed. This was a common practice with a lot of police departments.
Some departments allowed officers to carry a .357 revolver, but it had to be loaded with .38 Special ammo.

I had a 66 no dash with the stainless rear sight that I traded to a friend of mine. I can't remember when it was built. When I worked with the DOC in NJ, Our issue revolver was the S&W M-66. The only ammo authorized for it was the .38spl. Federal 125gr. JHP+P.
