Default Bicyclist's Friend

The Velo Dog, Velocipede=bicycle and Dog=Dog. These pistols were carried by European cyclists to ward off rabid dogs at around the turn of the century (no medication at that time).A very well made pistol that would use ammo with that name or 22 long in some cases. They lacked a trigger guard which is not very safe!! (mine uses 22 long)
Thanks for looking,
Joe

Very, very nice.

It almost looks as though it might take .22 Extra long (long defunct cartridge).

Used to be a place north of Clarkesville GA that used to sell antique and hard to find ammunition- I should have bought a box of the .22 Extra long they had at the time. Seems they wanted nearly $30.00 for the stuff- bought some Mexican made Remington 20ga paper hull shotshells pretty cheap though- #2 shot of all things.

Very, very nice piece. Belgian or German? I can't tell from the pictures, but look very Belgian, and quite similar and may borrow some superficial styling design characteristics from the Nagant family of revolvers.

.25 Velo Dog used to be a pretty good cartridge to fire in the CF match at Camp Perry, until it got decided that maybe .32 ought to be the smallest caliber. Charlie Askins did OK with it.
