Default Birds of the sea in flight

Thought I'd share some pictures I took of some birds in flight over the ocean near La Jolla, California this weekend. I was struck by their grace - even the awkward-looking pelicans seem to find their element in flight.

Beautiful pictures...I always loved birds but don't get to see sea birds very often. Not many of them here in the hills of east Ky. Thanks for sharing

Nice pics. I have always been impressed with how graceful the pelicans are as they soar low over the waves close to shore.

I used to do a lot of fishing in San Diego bay and we would always have pelicans floating close by waiting for a free handout.

Default Great photos.

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belly can.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week,
But I’m damned if I see how the hell he can.

I used to hear this quote as a youngster, and it wasn't til I was an adult I learned there was more to it.

Such a good angle on the pictures, John. You can almost count the feathers on each wing.

Thanks.

Great pics John - I "shot" some a few years ago along the gulf in FL - was amazed at the wingspan (around 8 ft) and length (4 ft or so). They were a treat to watch diving to feed. BIF's are not easy to photograph!
