Default Need help - markings on a 1905

Evening all.

I'm working on a left/right profile illustration of an early model 1905 S&W. I do own one, however my example had most of the frame markings ground off before the prior owner had it chromed. As such, I'm a little hazy on which markings I need to use and where they ought to go.

Here's what I've got so far. I'd appreciate any input as to whether these are correct or not.

Right side, barrel:

SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS U.S.A
PAT'D MARCH 27.94 MAY 21.95 AUG.4 96
DEC. 22.96. OCT. 8. 01 DEC 17. 01 FEB. 6. 06

Left side, barrel:

.38 S&W SPECIAL CTG

Frame, right, sideplate:

(S&W trademark)

Frame, right, lower front:

(no markings) Should the MADE IN U.S.A. be here, or did this come later?

Frame, left:

(no markings)

Both the topside barrel markings and the serial under the butt are intact, so I'm okay in that regard.

***

Any help greatly appreciated (pictures especially).

According to Smith & Wesson: 1857-1945 by Neal & Jinks, those patent dates in that order were applied to the Model of 1905, Second Change. Patent date rollmarks were different on guns with the earlier and later engineering changes.

There was no MADE IN U.S.A. rollmark at this time.

If the gun has those patent dates on the right side, it must have a four inch barrel. On longer barrels the patent dates are found on the top of the barrel. Actually I'm not sure what marks you would find on the top of a 1905/Second with a four inch barrel, but your post seems to suggest that you saw some on the one you are illustrating.

I don't have a 4" 1905/Second or I would post photos for you.

My eyes aren't good enough to reliably resolve fine detail in the patent stamp, but it looks like there are no spaces between dates, only periods are used for punctuation, and there is no apostrophe for the two-digit year indicators.

Hope this helps.

That helps immensely. Thank you.

I believe part of my confusion is that I now realize my example (the revolver I have in hand) is a 4th change, whereas the pictures I'm using for markings appear on a 4-inch 2nd change.

Mine (chromed) shows the patents on top of the barrel. Hence the mixup.

Guess I'll just have to draw both. What a terrible punishment.
