I am new to the forum but have always owned and enjoyed S & W revolvers. Recently I came into possession of an antique top break S &W, not in very good shape. I thought I would ask for some help here identifying it and, perhaps, locating some parts.
It is .44 caliber and has no markings except for the serial number on the round butt and the following on the top flat of the barrel: 2 lines begining with a tiny stylized cross then top line: "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN . 17 & 24. 65" Bottom line: "JULY 11 65 AUG 24 69 JULY 25 71 DEC 2 79 MAY 11 & 25 1880"
It has a round barrel, 6 1/2 inches long with a half moon foresight on the flat top of the barrel. Cyclinder is 1 7/16th long. Serial number is 20435 and the same number appears on the butt, the rear cylinder face, and on the under side of the barrel latch. The finish is gone, but the bore is surprisingly bright and pit free.
All the parts look like a .44 Double Action. From other photos I have seen, it looks like a first model Russian. Primarily, I am looking for grips for this firearm. The grips on it now are plain wood and look like someone made them in the garage at some time. The gun looks and seems to be in good mechanical shape except that it will not stay cocked for single action fire. It functions well in double action and the cylinder locks up properly, but I think the rear sear and rear sear spring are missing.
I don't think the gun is worth anything, but I would just like to get it back into functional condition. (I'm an engineer and it drives me crazy having a piece of equipment that doesn't work !) I would appreciate any help identifying the gun and, if there are any potential parts sources. I can manufacture the spring and rear sear, if I have to, but would prefer to find original parts. On the grips, are there any other models that use the same grips? Thanks in advance for any help.
