Default Need help identifying proofmarks,

if that is what they are. I picked up a 586 for cheap that is in very good condition, but has proofmarks unlike any I've ever seen. They won't show up in pics,so I'll do my best to describe them. They are located on the bottom of the barrel lug between the gas port and the crown. They read vertically as follows:

O
H
O
S
I
A
*
M
Y
_ This slash mark is located directly under the "Y".

All of this is followed by what looks like a smiley face with flames(or squiggly hairs) coming out of it's head. No kidding.
The same smiley face character is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder as well.
If anyone has any ideas as to their origin,I would appreciate your input. Thanks!

Take a look at this recent thread. Possible that a Smith via Germany has returned home? Your mention of an O with hair sounds like the flaming bomb proof marks noted later in this thread. Take a look and let us know.

Military Model 60?

THANKS! I had to get a friend to read the markings for me as my eyes weren't up to the task, even with a loop. Why I didn't think of a flaming bomb escapes me. I guess I just didn't associate it with a gun this new. Can't tell if there's an "L" within the flaming bomb though. I saw a couple of the other stamps shown in the referenced thread also. I'm now a lot closer to exactly what I have.
