THIS WEEKS PRUNDER 25-5
I found my grail gun this week that I have been looking for, for quite a while. I went into a little store of a friends Dad and was looking at several of his knivies he had and got to talking about smiths I knew he was a smith man, probably more than me, and asked him if he had a mod 25 45 lc. Well wouldn't you know it he had a few so asked if he would turn one loose well the rest is history. I'm tickled! He said he had a shooter that he might let go. So I went by the next day and looked at this so called shooter. It wasn't missing any blueing at all. What a great deal! not to mention the knivies I walked out with. I'll be going to see him often. NIce to see someone so easy to deal with. Doeboy

For those of you in the know. I dropped a 45 lead bullet into the cylinder holes and most just feel right through. I then shot it at just a random target to see if I could hit anything well it did pretty good for what I did. I was shooting some store bought 45 lc cowboy loads. I have heard the throats are over sized on these guns. So my question would be can I reload for this and have good accuracy with the same wad cutters I use for my 45 acp? Secondly What do you think of the grips? I now have wook targets on it should have a picture of it but slipped my mind.

I have a 6" from 1985 which will hold .452 bullets in the cylinder and a 1979 4" which will hold .454 bullets but let .452s pass through easily. I would load .454 bullets for your gun.

The only way to know if those bullets will shoot well is to load some and try some. Softer bullets tend to obturate ('bump up'), and will shoot well even through the larger chamber mouths, than do hard cast bullets.
If they don't shoot well, you have lots of options. You can buy the traditional 250 and 255 grain conical lead bullets, used in the traditional W-W and R-P factory loads, in bulk from several component dealers and these generally will shoot pretty well in the 25-5; they do in mine. Or, commercially cast bullets sized to .454". Or, cast your own.
Congrats. That is a classic cartridge and the N frame S&W is a fine home for it.

Nice gun. I predict you will learn more about revolvers by owning, reloading, and shooting a Smith 25-5, or any/all the 45 Colts than shooting any other model. Just so much to learn about chambers, throats, diameters, bullets, alloy, aaaaahhhhhahhhh!!!!.

Prunder is first off not being able to spell, second not being able to type, and third not being able to edit titles. yes I saw it but nothing I could do about. Doeboy

I have been pondering the oversized chamber issue. If the throats are a little over sized would it really matter? Meaning the bullet leaves the casing and in through the throat and down the barrel. The throat doesn't compress the bullet so that the lands and grooves still have full contact. In the past I knew of an issue that ruger had with throats that were too small and the way to get better accuracy was to open them up. Would this not work the reverse and increase the contact of lands and grooves while not letting any propellant pass by the bullet on the way out? therefore giving the bullet the maximum consistancy. When I shot mine it was great hit right were I aimed it but that was with factory cowboy loads. I haven't tried the hand loads yet I think they are ruger only but we'll see. What do yal'l think? Do you know what's in the handloads? They may be something you won't want to shoot in your gun.
