Default 2 Early K22 Outdoorsman

I'm doing my yearly gun cleaning, got these two
out and i just had to snap some pics and do a
little show and tell.

K22 Outdoorsman serial number 644676 left the factory
on March 17, 1933 and delivered to Canton Hardware Company,
Canton Ohio. This Has one screw rear sight and a small S&W logo
under the cylinder release, grips number as well. One of my favorites.

K22 Outdoorsman serial number 676412 left the factory
on November 15, 1939 and delivered to H&D Folsom Arms
Company, NYC NY. This has a two screw rear sight and a
large S&W logo on the side plate, grips number as well. I also have the
original red box. Both of these gun's are in that 95%+ condition the
pictures I posted don't do these justice, need to work on that skill. Thanks
for looking enjoy.....

Thanks for posting. Those are beautiful. I have a 1939 vintage OD also, but it's not quite as nice as yours.

Why don't we have a "jealous" smiley?

I think the K-22 Outdoorsman may be one of the most adventurous handguns S&W ever put into production. It took a lot of effort to get them to put out a .22 I-frame with target sights in the first place, and then to go into production on an even heavier .22 target revolver as the Great Depression deepened seems almost foolhardy. But clearly there was a market for the K-frame .22s, limited though it was at the time, and as the design matured the market grew. After the war, in a recovering economy, the surge in K-22 sales showed what an interest there was in a mid-size gun that chambered the .22 LR.

They are fine firearms as a class, and your two examples are really nice.

I have a couple of K-22 ODs that I shoot occasionally. I should probably try to get them to the range more often.

Really really nice guns there.

I have SN 674240 with the 2 screw rear site (just a couple thousand earlier than your second one) shipped in March of 1939......and I just wish it looked half as good as either one of yours.

All I see in the SCSW is "earliest production had only one screw holding on the rear sight."
No serial number ranges are shown.

One of my two .22 ODs is 646390. The last time I checked, this was the lowest numbered OD known with two screws at the rear of the sight bar. There is a nearby two-screw gun numbered about 200 higher. All known lower-numbered ODs have only the single screw at the rear of the sight -- unless a new double-screw gun has shown up in the last few months.

646390 was shipped in April of 1934.
