here is a link for some pics i took. i didn't notice it when i purchased the pistol, as i just had cataract surgery. $435 and 240mi traveling, i expected something a little better. i sent smith and email with the link. guess i'll wait and see. not impressed with the slide/frame gap either. guess i should a just got the SR9 and been done with it. oh well.

So what are you concerns exactly? Your post is vague and all I can see in the photos is some minor cosmetic issues. Issues that if you could not see upon purchase should have been seen by the salesman.

yes, it is "cosmetic". half of the labeling on the left side of the pistol is different than the rest of the gun. it looks terrible. it's a small issue, until you really think about it. how did it make it through quality control? what else could they have missed if they didn't care about the most visible part of the pistol? i can live with the gap between the frame and slide, but for the price i paid i think it's unacceptable. Would you be satisfied? i have driven 240mi to purchase this pistol. the closest store that could get me the sd9 was gander mt, and it's 60mi from my house. i had to wait 24hrs to pick it up, and another 120mi round trip. now when i have it at home and have the time to clean it, i notice the labeling and the gap. i'm just more than a little miffed. i picked this pistol over 2 sig sauer models, and the ruger sr9 and p95. i hope s&w does right by me. has anyone else noticed this on their pistols?

I'd be chapped too. If I were in your situation I would call Smith & Wesson and have them send a shipping label and send it back. It has been my experience that they will make it right. The slide to frame gap is not a big deal, but the roll marking shows no pride of craftsmanship and how can you take pride as the owner? Obviously your descision to make.

I'd be more worried of that Cataract Surgery and the 240 miles you traveled with those eyes than the Roll Scroll Markings. The Gap as you refer to it is there to facilitate the Slide Release catching the slide either manually or on the last round pop up of the Magazine Follower.

I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight knowing that such a horrible oversight slipped through S&W's QC. And I bet you bugs to barnacles that is gonna make that weapon shoot Low To The Left.

first, you only need 1 eye to legally drive. i could see distance, had trouble reading(reading glasses only helped a little). second, i had someone else do the driving. and thanks alot john, now i have another reason to get rid of the piece of junk. i'll be up all night wishing i would have gotten the sr9c instead......

So let me see if I got this right; basically you purchased a product that you were unable to adequately inspect along with a driver who was also unable to adequately inspect it, you blame this entirely on Smith & Wesson (who admittedly failed to properly inspect the pistol) and not with Gander Mountain who also failed to properly inspect the pistol (then sold it you) while all along feeling buyers remorse and believing that somehow Ruger's quality control is air tight and that they do not make mistakes. Oh and you decided to come to a forum dedicated to fans of the platform to criticize it and find fault only with its manufacturer. I will admit that I am naturally defensive of S&W if you admit that sounds a little trollish.

Take it back to Gander Mountain, return it as a defective product and buy that Ruger SR9. I hope it serves your needs well and you are happy with it. I have no experience with them but have read good things about the more recent production models.

If someone was really on the ball that one would realize he just might have a RARE SD and hang onto it. Funny thing is I could see much better the next day after having my Cataract Surgery. So concern should be there in your case. You'll have NO Problem selling it for more than you paid if you post those Pics with it. Now you can Thank Me.

the comment about the sr9 was sarcastic. i could have bought that locally instead of driving to pick up the sd9. the reason i got the sd9 was reading all the positive comments about it here. i owned a sigma 40 for many yrs, i'm a smith fan. yes, it is my fault for purchasing a firearm with compromised eyesight. the last thing i worried about was a cosmetic flaw. i have known the sales person for 20yrs, so there was no deception on his part. the person with me was not a gun person-just giving me a ride. and lastly, i'm teed off and wanted to vent. i guess i should have known better than to complain about a brand new s&w gun on a s&w forum. maybe i should hang out with the glock guys so i can complain and get a little sympathy.(again being sarcastic)

Sorry that you are displeased with your purchase. That always stinks.

To be honest it wouldn't bother me. It's not a show piece right? However, see if S&W will swap out the slide since the rollmark is so noticeable. Not sure about the gap, looks fine to me.

If it makes you feel any better, I understand that SR9's can't be dry fired (with out a snap cap anyway) which I, personally, would have more issue with.

I would still take either out and shoot though

I think I'd be disappointed with the roll mark S&W name too. The issues mentioned (long drive and problems with eyesight) are irrelevant to that issue; there is no question about the problem tracking back to poor work (probably a broken roller) and failure to QC at the factory.

The circumstances make it more frustrating for the poster, and I sympathize. I've had my experiences... we all do.

S&W offers top customer service. I'd say, call them, send it in, give them a chance to make it right. SDs are great working guns/shooters. It will seem well worth it once they fix it and you shoot it a bunch.

thank you s&w rover. that is the point i was trying to make, although after rereading my original post i was a little confusing. i am disappointed that they would ship a pistol out with this obvious issue. granted, it will probably shoot just fine forever. but that's not the issue. i paid a lot of money( to me) and spent hrs researching( had plenty of time-off of work until 10lb restriction was lifted) and chose this pistol. i read every sd post on this site if they are letting things like this go through, what else are they overlooking that we(as consumers)are oblivious to? i would love for smith to restamp/replace the slide. i haven't even shot it yet. i will call on monday and see what they say. i will post what transpires here. i was given my first pistol (22cal mod 34) when i was 16yrs old, and literally wore it out. they repaired it no charge. i hope this is repeated.

Default Quality control

All of the companies go thru periods when they have quality problems. I have seen a new SW auto that has a flaw across the rifleing no less. It's only a few milimeters but it's there.
A few earley Ruger autos (9 mm) suffered functional problems.
And Colt? Off center roll markings, bad barell bushings.
Guns are expensive-the roll markings aren't satisfactory.

The OP's issues were addressed in post #4. Due to the rash of snarky unhelpful comments this thread is now closed.
