Default Won Red Navy Victory on Gun Broker

I bid on and won a "Property of U.S. Navy" Victory on Gun Broker, I took a chance as it was "as is" but the marking on the frame looked correct. The pictures made it look a little worse than it is, it is well used, but with good honest wear, the bore looks good. It was missing the lanyard ring but I had two extras. I think I got a good deal and am happy with the gun, it was shipped Nov 14 1942 sn V150624. The grips do not number to the gun but fit fine.

Not to be negative, but. I'd get it lettered. The engraving looks wrong, too thick.

There are fake "Red Navys" out there, but yours looks OK from the photo. Sometimes these Red Navys will not letter as shipped to the Navy, but the're OK guns, as lots of Victory Models were shipped to the Army as the Purchasing authority for the Navy & Marines. There is a prominent S&W dealer who swears all Red Navies are fakes, however he is mistaken. I grew up in San Diego during WW2 and saw lots of Red Navys and the same "Property of U.S.Navy" stamping was used on many items besides handguns. You saw it on tools, equipment, parts, etc. As Popgun says, there are different widths to the letters in the stampings, but that is only because the stamp dies were not all made on the same machine or by the same die cutter. Ed.

I will be getting it lettered, it has US Navy on the left top strap.
I was in the Navy for 4 years, while I didn't see any Victory's lots of equipment had the markings.
Also I do volunteer work on the Battleship Massachusetts, same thing lots of equipment marked, much with red filled markings.
I will check them and this out carefully, so far it looks ok to me, but I will keep an open mind, and continue researching.
